During the March 5, 2021 finale of Marvel's WandaVision, Vision stopped his fight with White Vision by invoking the Ship of Theseus thought experiment instead of throwing another punch. Viewers loved the pivot so much that within a day Twitter users were parodying the moment with Evil Kermit edits and Men Discussing Things screencaps.

Overview

Fans received the Ship of Theseus exchange as peak Vision behavior, since the character talks his evil clone into a philosophy seminar instead of finishing a fistfight. Paul Bettany plays both Visions, and much of the online praise focused on his dual performance and the writers' choice to end a superhero brawl with Greek metaphysics1.

Jokes often leaned on the gap between stakes and tone. Fans ran the Vision-on-Vision debate through Evil Kermit edits and Men Discussing Things stock-photo captions, two formats where small decisions get oversold with mock gravity3. The Mary Sue summarized the mood by saying Vision had defused his opposite 'with an old-school dose of the metaphysics of identity'1.

Vision battles a reanimated version of himself, called White Vision, in the March 5, 2021 WandaVision finale on Disney+. Both Visions are evenly matched in strength, so Vision shifts to philosophy: 'You are familiar with the thought experiment The Ship of Theseus in the field of identity metaphysics?' White Vision answers 'Naturally,' and the two debate until White Vision realizes he too has a claim to the name Vision1.

The puzzle itself long predates the show. It asks whether a wooden ship whose planks are gradually replaced is still the same ship, with a second version wondering whether a vessel rebuilt from the original planks would hold the claim instead2. Plato and later Locke both revisited the question over the centuries1.

How It Spread

Reactions landed on Twitter the same night the finale aired. @JoshuaYehl posted that the exchange was 'the most Vision thing that has ever happened,' and the tweet gathered more than 5,500 likes4. @wandasolsen made a near-identical observation soon after, telling followers the scene was 'literally the most Vision thing to ever exist, change my mind,' which drew over 14,000 likes5.

Parody posts arrived almost as quickly. @iclarke95 remade the moment as an Evil Kermit edit the day after the episode aired, with one Vision whispering about identity metaphysics to the other; the post gained more than 17,000 likes6. @RahSamer went with a Men Discussing Things stock-photo mashup and picked up roughly 3,700 likes7. The Mary Sue aggregated several of the jokes within days, pointing readers to the Evil Kermit remix and other riffs on Vision's philosophy lecture1.
