Overview

Way To Go Squidward You Ruined His Favorite Fucking Holiday For Him is a viral greenscreen video where a guy in a baja hoodie and long curly hair inserts himself into a SpongeBob SquarePants scene to yell at Squidward for being cruel to SpongeBob1. The clip's creator, Instagram user @garbanzo_meatball (also known as Nass), uses purposefully janky chroma keying, which is a big part of the joke5. His confrontation includes the line, "When we kissed that night, I thought there was magic. Now, I wish we never even did it," implying a romantic history with the cartoon squid1.

The clip went viral through early 2024 after a February Instagram repost by Nass pulled in over 75,800 likes1. TikTok reuploads then pushed the video into the hundreds of thousands of views3. Nass has run the same self-insert format against characters from King of the Hill and Smiling Friends5.

How to Use This Meme

People typically make their own version by greenscreening themselves into an existing cartoon scene with intentionally sloppy chroma keying, then monologuing at an animated character as though they share a personal or romantic history with them5. The comedic gap between the crude edit and the seriousness of the confrontation is the joke.
