What is Anti Joke Chicken?

Anti Joke Chicken is a 2011 image macro that pairs a hen on an advice animal starburst with joke setups that end in flat, literal non-answers instead of punchlines.

Where did Anti Joke Chicken come from?

The macro's base photo was taken by ophthalmic photographer Marshall E. Tyler in North Carolina, and 4chan posters turned it into the anti-humor template that surfaced on Reddit and Quickmeme in February 2011.

What does Anti Joke Chicken mean?

The image plays on anti-humor, a comedy style where the missing punchline is itself the punchline, so the setup gets a flat literal answer instead of a joke.

How do you use Anti Joke Chicken?

Pair a familiar joke opening like "Two guys walk into a bar" with the flattest, most literal answer possible, keeping the tone deadpan with no wordplay or twist.

Is Anti Joke Chicken still popular?

Anti Joke Chicken had its peak on Quickmeme and Memegenerator in 2011 and 2012 and now sits as a classic advice animal template rather than an active trending format.

Anti Joke Chicken is a 2011 image macro pairing a hen photo with anti-humor captions, using the same starburst background as classic advice animals. The setup reads like a familiar joke opening, and the second line answers with something plainly literal instead of a punchline. It broke out of 4chan onto Reddit and Quickmeme in February 2011.

Overview

Anti Joke Chicken is an image macro that puts a photo of a hen on the starburst background used by classic advice animals2. The top line looks like the opening of a familiar joke, and the bottom line answers with something completely literal, so the flat non-answer is the actual joke. Anti-humor works this way in general, treating absence of a punchline as the punchline1.

The style long predates the internet. A well-known mid-1800s joke uses the same setup-and-nothing shape and is often pointed to as part of the tradition Anti Joke Chicken sits in1.

The base photo was taken by professional ophthalmic photographer Marshall E. Tyler at his home in North Carolina, where he owned the hen2. Anonymous 4chan users later cropped the image onto a standard advice animal starburst and paired it with joke openings that resolved into flat, literal statements1.

How It Spread

4chan had been running anti-humor threads well before the chicken template existed, with an archived thread going back to June 30, 2007. The chicken variant broke into wider view in early 2011. On February 20, 2011, a Reddit user posted a thread titled "It's the anti-joke chicken!!!!" linking to an Imgur gallery of four early examples, and credited 4chan's /b/ as where the images came from2. Two days later, on February 22, 2011, the first Anti Joke Chicken image landed on Quickmeme, opening the format up to anyone with a browser.

Anti Joke Chicken sat alongside classic advice animals through the meme generator era of 2011 and 2012, and the template stayed a go-to for anti-humor over punchline humor1.

How to Use This Meme

The setup line typically borrows a familiar joke opening like "Why did the chicken cross the road" or "Two guys walk into a bar," and the answer line resolves it with the most literal or mundane possible response. Common convention keeps the tone deadpan, with no wordplay, twist, or callback1.
