Where did Boob Ribbon come from?

It comes from the character design of Hestia in the J.C. Staff anime adaptation of DanMachi, which first aired on April 3, 2015.

The ribbon is still Hestia's permanent visual identifier whenever DanMachi is discussed, though the 2015 real-life cleavage-boost trend itself faded after its initial burst.

Overview

The Boob Ribbon, called 例の紐 (Rei no Himo, translated from Japanese as 'That Ribbon'), is the blue ribbon worn by Hestia, a goddess character in the anime and light novel Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? (also known as DanMachi)3. It loops under her chest and over her upper arms, appearing to lift her bust every time she raises them1.

Hestia is drawn in a short white dress with a plunging neckline, gloves, and long twin-tail hair, but fans latched onto the ribbon as her defining feature1. The design's odd chest-support logic turned into a running joke in the fandom, spilling out into real-life imitation, copycat merchandise, and Western tabloid coverage.

The light novel series Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? began circulation in 2013, with J.C. Staff's anime adaptation first airing on April 3, 20153. Hestia was designed with a blue ribbon tied under her breasts and looped over each upper arm, meant in-universe to support her chest even though it obviously didn't do much of anything1.

How It Spread

Within three weeks of the anime premiere, Hestia fan art on Pixiv passed 1,000 entries, and Pixiv's daily view tracker peaked at 722,886 views on April 9, 20152. A single-serving site called hestia.dance also popped up, looping a clip of Hestia and Bell Cranel brushing their teeth to the Fairly OddParents song 'My Shiny Teeth and Me'4.

On April 8, 2015, Japanese Twitter users started tying actual blue ribbons around their torsos to test the cleavage-boost theory5. Cosplayer @aiya23mt08cos posted a video of her attempt and concluded the string did not deliver, though the tweet still hit around 6,000 retweets and 4,500 favorites within roughly ten days5. Western outlets picked the trend up soon after, with the Daily Mail publishing a piece on Japanese women uploading their own Hestia-inspired photos1.

Shops in Akihabara jumped on the buzz by selling and in some cases giving away Hestia-style ribbons to visitors3. Dolls and Lego figures dressed with the ribbon also started circulating online1.

The standard version is a single blue ribbon tied under the chest with the loops resting on the upper arms and knotted at the back, matching Hestia's dress1. Some cosplayers add a second loop around the torso for a tighter shape. As the April 2015 testers reported, actual lift is pretty limited5.
