Concern is a redraw and reaction image series showing fandom characters with their hands clasped in prayer to signal mock worry over a post.

Where did *Concern* come from?

Tumblr user nondidd posted the original Tadashi Hamada comic on April 5th, 2015, replying to a Twitter joke about Baymax wearing a Hiro mask.

What does *Concern* mean?

It expresses ironic worry over a questionable image, thread or ship, usually with the praying character acting as the artist's silent reaction to whatever is posted above.

How do you use *Concern*?

Fans redraw a character from their fandom in the clasped-hands pose and drop it as a reply, so Dark Souls artists post the Darkwraith, Zootopia artists post Nick Wilde and Warhammer artists post the Commissar.

Is *Concern* still popular?

The format works as a classic fandom reaction image, with the 2018 Gathered Concern compilation still passed around as the canonical collection of all iterations.

Concern is a reaction image series that draws fandom characters with hands clasped like they're praying, used to express mock worry about a post. Tumblr user nondidd kicked it off on April 5th, 2015 with a three-panel comic starring Tadashi Hamada from Big Hero 6. Within three years, fans had redrawn the pose with Darkwraith, Nick Wilde and a Warhammer 40,000 Commissar, feeding into a March 2018 Gathered Concern compilation that collected the whole lineage into one macro.

Overview

Each entry follows the same visual grammar: a character looks slightly off-camera with both hands clasped at chest level, mouth tight, as if silently praying for whoever posted the thing above1. The joke sits in the gap between a serious prayer pose and the trivial or unhinged thing it reacts to, usually a cursed image, a Rule 34 artwork or a thread the artist wants to disavow without leaving.

Different fandoms claim different characters as their house version of Concern. Big Hero 6 fans use Tadashi Hamada, Dark Souls fans use a Darkwraith, Zootopia circles use Nick Wilde, and Warhammer 40,000 artists lean on the Commissar2. Each redraw works as a signature of that community rather than a one-off edit, which is why the 2018 Gathered Concern image lands as a joke, every subculture praying in unison about the same post3.

On April 5th, 2015, Tumblr user nondidd posted a three-panel comic replying to a Twitter joke about Baymax wearing a Hiro mask, with the final panel showing Tadashi Hamada clasping his hands in silent worry over the premise1. The post reached around 55,600 notes before the account went down, and Know Your Meme credits nondidd with drawing the Tadashi panel itself3. Later redraws were made by other fans copying that specific pose rather than tracing nondidd's art.

How It Spread

Facebook page Knight Artorias the Abysswalker reposted the Tadashi version on September 23rd, 2015, then drew its own Darkwraith edition from Dark Souls the same day4. On December 1st, 2015, MemeCenter user LucaZero paired the Tadashi image with a screenshot about lolis, giving the format its first documented use as a direct reaction macro aimed at a specific post5. The Zootopia version appeared in early 2016 from a since-deleted 4chan thread, documented in an April 8th, 2016 /r/zootopia post asking for the source6. Nick Wilde quickly became the version 4chan users posted under Rule 34 art.

Imgur user MagnusMan compiled the Tadashi, Darkwraith and Nick Wilde drawings into one post on August 22nd, 2016, which gathered about 16,200 views7. DeviantArt artist Buttery-Commissar added a Warhammer 40,000 Commissar on April 12th, 2017, picking up roughly 4,000 views2. A since-deleted Redditor stitched the lineup together as the Gathered Concern image on March 8th, 2018, formalizing the format as a running fandom in-joke3.
