Overview

Everybody Gangsta Until is a phrasal template meme built on the sentence "Everybody Gangsta Until X," where X is whatever unexpected thing makes the supposedly tough person immediately drop the act1. The joke plays on the gap between projected bravado and how fast people crack when something weird, gross or scary shows up.

The format lives in both video and image macro form. Clips typically show someone acting cool right up to the moment a bug, an animal or a random object does something startling, while captioned photos pair the phrase with a spider, an insect or another trigger2. Because the setup is so open, the template stretches to almost any scenario where composure gets broken.

The earliest known usage of the meme was posted to the r/gifs subreddit on September 20th, 2015 by Redditor Nadiime, in a thread titled "Everybody gangsta until the cockroach starts flying"1. The clip of a cockroach unexpectedly taking flight pulled in over 14,000 points and around 960 comments over the following years, with an 87% upvote ratio1.

That first post locked in the whole structure: a normal scene, a subject acting unbothered, then a sudden shift that ruins the vibe. Later riffs on the format all trace back to this cockroach-flying setup3.

How It Spread

The template jumped to still images fairly quickly. On March 19th, 2017, me.me scraped a photograph of a spider with the caption "everbody gangsta until the spider moves," originally posted to Instagram, which pulled in more than 50 likes before being deleted2.

Later in 2017, YouTube channel All Def posted a short comedy sketch called "Everybody is Gangsta Until," leaning into the phrase for a scripted bit that racked up more than 78,000 views3. The following year, on November 12th, 2018, YouTuber hyouka uploaded "everybody gangsta till the pants start walking," a clip that gathered over 11,000 views inside three months4.

Those three variations, a bug, a spider and a pair of walking pants, mapped out the range of the format across Reddit, Instagram and YouTube and helped push it into wider circulation as a catchphrase5.

How to Use This Meme

To use the Everybody Gangsta Until template, start with the fixed opener "Everybody Gangsta Until" and finish with whatever unexpected trigger breaks the tough-guy pose. It typically pairs with either a short video where the reveal happens on screen, or a photo of the trigger itself, often a bug, animal or object doing something out of the ordinary1. Common convention keeps the setup deadpan so the punchline lands on the specific thing named after "until."
