Extended Cut YTMNDs are a 2006 YTMND fad in which the audio track of a site is edited to hold a single note, syllable, or sound for absurdly long durations. The format began with syncan's 'Gay Conclusion' on May 19, 2006, and was named and popularized the next day by user Dasyati.

Overview

Extended Cut YTMNDs are a genre of YTMND site where a familiar audio clip is edited so that one note, syllable, or sound is held for an impossibly or unnecessarily long time1. The joke rides on the listener's mounting realization that the sustained sound is not going to resolve, or that a punchline is being deferred well past the point of reason3.

Because a YTMND site pairs a single looping image with a repeating audio file, the format is well suited to this kind of sonic prank. The visual stays static while the stretched-out audio does the comedic work, turning short pop culture snippets like game show cues, TV themes, or movie lines into minutes-long drones2.

The first Extended Cut YTMND was 'Gay Conclusion,' posted by user syncan on May 19, 20061. The next day, May 20, 2006, YTMND user Dasyati, who was already known on the site as the creator of the 'Conan is an Alligator' fad, uploaded three sites using the same technique, beginning with 'Corn on the Cob (extended cut)'2. Dasyati explicitly labeled the technique a fad in his site descriptions, and posted three more entries on June 9, 10, and 11, 20063.

How It Spread

Because Dasyati announced the fad rather than letting it catch on organically, it was later classified within the YTMND community as a 'Forced Meme,' a judgment reinforced by how many new instances he kept uploading himself3. His persistence worked anyway. Other users picked up the template within weeks, producing sites such as 'DEW! (extended cut)'4 and 'New York (extended cut)'5.

Between 2006 and 2008, roughly 41 more Extended Cut YTMNDs were built by other users, drawing on source material as varied as Star Wars, Star Trek, R. Kelly, and Wheel of Fortune3. Entries like 'Vader (extended cut)' carried the format into the Star Wars fandom on YTMND6. The fad stayed confined to YTMND itself and faded along with the site's declining traffic in the late 2000s.

How to Use This Meme

A typical Extended Cut YTMND takes a short audio clip and stretches or loops one sound, word, or musical note to an absurd length, paired with a static or looping image. The convention is that the visual references the original source (a screenshot from the show, movie, or ad) while the audio's endless sustain becomes the punchline.
