Overview

Gumbo Slice is an AI-generated character built around a single recurring image: a large Black man eating pizza in a Louisiana-style swamp, usually surrounded by alligators or crocodiles and dressed in camo shorts and boots1. The name is a play on the late UFC fighter and boxer Kimbo Slice, coined by Reddit commenters who wanted a proper handle for the pizza-loving swamp guy2.

The character grew directly out of the Alligator Kick meme, also called Black Guy Kicking Alligator, which showed the same man booting a gator away from his pizza2. Most Gumbo Slice pictures were generated with Midjourney, Stable Diffusion or Bing Image Creator, and the images stand out because the AI-swamp aesthetic looks convincing enough that early viewers openly wondered if the photos were real1.

Before the nickname existed, the Facebook page Uncle Mike's Photography had already been posting AI images of an overweight Black man in swampy pizza scenes throughout 20232. On September 30th, 2023, Uncle Mike's Photography uploaded a Facebook set that included what became the viral Alligator Kick shot, and the post pulled in roughly 16,000 reactions over four days2.

The character crossed to Reddit on October 1st, 2023, when user drangis_ reposted the images to r/midjourney asking whether they were real, gathering about 25,100 upvotes in three days2. The name itself landed a day later: on October 2nd, 2023, Redditor MeggirbotOnMJ replied to another r/midjourney thread asking for a name for the man and his alligator with the suggestion Gumbo Slice, and the comment picked up over 970 upvotes2.

How It Spread

Once the nickname stuck, r/midjourney filled up with fresh Gumbo Slice renditions. On October 1st, 2023, Redditor oldfoundations posted a 1970s dark fantasy version that pulled about 6,700 upvotes in three days, and on October 2nd, Redditor ImmacowMeow shared an image of Gumbo Slice and the alligator getting married that got roughly 8,800 upvotes2.

The character also jumped to X. On October 2nd, 2023, user @HimeHinghoi posted a redraw pairing an original Gumbo Slice image with Hitori Gotoh from Bocchi the Rock!, racking up about 22,200 likes in two days2. Two dedicated subreddits, r/pizzagator and r/GumboSlice, were spun up during the same early October window, and Uncle Mike's Photography kept feeding the Facebook audience more images from the same universe2.

Brands noticed quickly. On October 3rd, 2023, the official World of Warcraft X account posted a Pandaren-and-crocolisk nod to the meme that pulled over 6,000 likes and 100 replies in 20 hours2. Meme sites also picked it up, with eBaum's World running a piece framing the images as a swamp love story between Gumbo Slice and his gator that stretched from the pizza fight to a Met Gala appearance1.

How to Use This Meme

Most Gumbo Slice posts are new AI generations rather than caption edits. The common convention is a Midjourney or Stable Diffusion prompt featuring a large Black man in camo shorts and boots, a swamp or bayou backdrop, at least one alligator, and a pizza somewhere in the frame1. From there people typically drop him into other genres or crossovers, like the 1970s dark fantasy and anime redraw variants that trended on r/midjourney and X in early October 20232.
