Overview

Homeless Man Doing Kung Fu is a short clip of a South African man throwing kung fu strikes in the street, filmed and posted by TikTok user @oom_jan_the_china in October 20231. Some recuts circulate under the names Homeless Man Doing Karate or Homeless Man Domain Expansion, depending on which edit picked them up3.

The footage moved in two waves. The raw clips first went viral on their own as watchable oddity content, then editors added captions calling the man a homeless person and dropped the instrumental of Babykjj's "High Off Life" underneath, which became the default backing track for the stylized cuts3.

Between October 14th and 15th, 2023, @oom_jan_the_china posted four videos of the man demonstrating his moves outside on a South African street1. The strongest of the batch cleared 10.2 million views inside a month, giving the footage enough reach for other TikTokers to start pulling it into their own edits3.

How It Spread

In mid-November 2023, TikTokers began reposting the clip with captions framing the man as homeless, folding him into the "microwaved honey bun at a homeless man" bit and other ironic anti-homeless jokes tied to TikToker Hoop Angel earlier that year. One of the earliest of these edits came from @iambandhunter2 on November 16th, 2023 and pulled in more than 9.6 million views within ten days3.

A run of stylized edits followed. On November 21st, 2023, @salami_b235 posted a version that crossed 2 million views in six days. The next day, @.jayxedit4 released a Jujutsu Kaisen domain expansion cut of the footage that hit 24 million views in five days, the biggest single edit of the wave. On November 23rd, TikToker @bfarr2006 posted hand-drawn redraws of the choreography that added roughly 240,000 views over four days.

How to Use This Meme

Edits typically freeze on one of the man's kung fu strikes, layer captions in the Hoop Angel "violence against homeless people" style, and drop the instrumental of Babykjj's "High Off Life" underneath3. Anime crossover cuts often overlay a Jujutsu Kaisen domain expansion effect at the moment he opens his stance4.
