"I'm Mary Poppins, Y'all" is a catchphrase from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, shouted by Yondu (Michael Rooker) as he flies through space on his arrow1. The bizarre Julie Andrews reference took off within weeks of the film's May 2017 release, fueled by fan photoshops and by Rooker himself, who leaned into the joke on Instagram until it turned into a full-blown Marvel meme3.

Overview

The joke works because Yondu, a blue-skinned space pirate with zero grasp of Earth pop culture, compares himself to a prim British nanny mid-action sequence. His straight-armed pose while riding his arrow visually mirrors Julie Andrews floating with her umbrella in the 1964 Disney film, which is the whole gag Peter Quill is trying to correct him on1.

Fan riffs stuck to a few clear templates: Yondu's head photoshopped onto Mary Poppins' body, Yondu dropped into the Mary Poppins movie poster or soundtrack cover, and custom Funko Pop swaps that put the Yondu figure inside a Mary Poppins box3. Michael Rooker's own Instagram account became a big driver, with the actor reposting fan art and cosplay pairings under the hashtag #immarypoppinsyall1.

The line comes from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Marvel sequel directed by James Gunn that opened in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017 after an April 10 international premiere3. In the third-act sequence, Yondu (Michael Rooker) uses his Yaka arrow to fly next to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and boasts, "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!" Quill, exasperated, tells him that is actually a good thing2.

The exchange landed as one of the movie's stand-out comedic beats because it captures Yondu's oblivious pride in a Terran reference he does not really understand, which fans flagged almost immediately after opening weekend1.

How It Spread

The first fan tributes showed up within a day of the U.S. release. On May 6, 2017, YouTuber Jeffrey Cruz uploaded a time-lapse of a Yondu-as-Mary-Poppins portrait, which pulled in more than 21,000 views over the following ten weeks2. On May 7, Instagram user @_dpiddy posted a photoshop of Mary Poppins' body attached to Yondu's head that pulled roughly 3,200 likes, and Redditor Isai76 reposted it to r/marvelstudios on May 13, where it hit about 3,600 points at 90% upvoted3.

Michael Rooker then poured gas on it. On May 9 he shared a Yondu-on-the-Mary-Poppins-soundtrack edit to his Instagram (around 46,000 likes), and six days later he reposted a custom Funko Pop showing a Yondu figure in a Mary Poppins box (about 32,000 likes)3. The peak moment came on May 16, 2017, when Rooker posted a Disneyland photo of himself with a Mary Poppins park character, captioned "She's Mary Poppins y'all… just kidding… #immarypoppinsyall #yondu #GotGVol2", which drew more than 65,000 likes in 24 hours3. Redditor wdouglas37 shared another angle of the same shot to r/Marvel, where it reached over 16,000 points3.

The Disneyland photo picked up write-ups from Entertainment Weekly, Uproxx and Cinema Blend, which called the line "a highlight of the film" and framed the meet-up as a real-world payoff to the joke1. Twitter also published a Moments page collecting reactions to the picture4.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically pairs Yondu imagery with Mary Poppins iconography: umbrella swaps, soundtrack or poster remixes, and Funko Pop box mock-ups are the common conventions. The catchphrase itself often gets dropped as a caption whenever someone is doing something goofy while claiming to be graceful or magical.
