What is Insanity Puppy?

Insanity Puppy is a 2011 advice animal image macro of a Siberian husky puppy paired with wildly psychotic top/bottom captions, positioned as the fluffier cousin of Insanity Wolf.

Where did Insanity Puppy come from?

The photo hit Reddit on September 1st, 2011 and jumped onto humor blogs within a week, with Pleated Jeans publishing a 22-image round-up under the 'Best of the Insanity Puppy Meme' title on September 7th.

What does Insanity Puppy mean?

The joke plays on the contrast between the puppy's adorable husky face and over-the-top villainous captions, casting him as a junior Insanity Wolf who is 'a whole lot cuter' but no less ruthless.

How do you use Insanity Puppy?

Drop a mundane top-line prompt and a cartoonishly evil bottom-line reaction on the base image, the same recipe the September 2011 blog compilations used to build out the format.

Is Insanity Puppy still popular?

The macro peaked with the September 2011 advice animal wave, spreading through blog compilations like Pleated Jeans and Uproxx's 'Meme Watch' slideshow rather than reappearing as a mainstream format later.

Overview

Insanity Puppy runs on the same top/bottom advice animal template as Insanity Wolf, but the base image is a wide-eyed Siberian husky puppy whose eye markings arch upward like the exaggerated brows of a cartoon villain3. The top line sets up something ordinary, and the bottom line drops a threat that feels way too dark for a face this cute1.

Fans stuck the pup in the same family as Insanity Wolf and Baby Courage Pup, keeping the 'adorable animal, deranged monologue' bit going into the puppy end of the advice animal wave1. Compilations from September 2011 lean hard on that contrast, layering escalating villainous punchlines onto a face that looks like it just learned to sit2.

On September 1st, 2011, redditor upparoom uploaded the original two-pane photo of the husky pup with the collar tag blacked out and the caption 'My puppy will eat your soul and ask for seconds,' and the post pulled 1,636 upvotes and 682 comments in the first month while redditor DaveFishBulb coined the nickname 'Insanity Pup' in the comments about two and a half hours later and redditor TychoVhargon posted the first known derivation, a Hypnotoad mashup, that same day3.

How It Spread

Humor blog Pleated Jeans published a 22-image compilation titled 'Best of the Insanity Puppy Meme' on September 7th, 2011, calling the pup 'a whole lot cuter than Insanity Wolf' but no less ruthless1. Comedy blog Uproxx followed on September 14th with a 'Meme Watch' slideshow of Insanity Puppy macros, giving the format its next big blog boost2.

Through the rest of September 2011, the macro also cycled through FunnyJunk, Comixed, DailyLaugh, ThumbPress, and Quickmeme galleries, and the 'Insanity Puppy' spelling gradually took over from the original 'Insanity Pup' as the standard name3. The pup never grew past his advice animal roots into a wider mainstream format, but the September 2011 blog cycle locked him in as the fluffy junior counterpart of Insanity Wolf1.

How to Use This Meme

Common convention is to set up a mundane top-line prompt and pay it off with a cartoonishly evil bottom-line reaction, keeping the puppy's face centered so the arched brow markings carry the visual punchline1. Compilations typically escalate from mild misbehavior to full villain-monologue territory2.
