Overview

[Intensifies] typically appears in brackets alongside a verb or noun describing an escalating action, like "[revving intensifies]" or "[Freedom intensifies]"1. Most versions pair the text with a subject that appears to shake or vibrate, whether a still image made to jitter as a GIF or a static macro of a character mid-reaction. The bracketed format mimics closed-caption style, which is why it reads as descriptive narration rather than spoken dialogue1.

Common subjects include cartoon characters, animals, historical figures, and reaction-face celebrities. The caption always describes an emotion or activity that is somehow ramping up, and the surrounding brackets are a required part of the format1.

The bracketed phrasing traces back to Season 5 Episode 4 of Breaking Bad, where the closed caption "[revving intensifies]" appeared as Walter White and his son revved their car engines3. The first known image macro use came on December 27, 2012, when a "Rustling Intensifies" macro featuring the Gorilla Munch cereal mascot was posted to 4chan's /tv/ board in response to someone calling The Wire "a cop show." According to Google Trends data cited by Urban Dictionary, searches for "intensifies meme" first spiked in November 20121.

How It Spread

The [Intensifies] format jumped to Tumblr on April 6, 2013, when the Cinco Family blog posted a Paul Rudd screenshot from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! captioned "[music intensifies]," reaching over 700 notes in five months3. Reddit picked it up on July 2, 2013 with a vibrating Applejack and Rarity GIF captioned "scrunching intensifies" on /r/mylittlepony. Two weeks later /r/SuperShibe got a shaking Doge GIF with "wow intensifies," and by September a vibrating René Descartes portrait had landed on 4chan's /vp/ board.

In April 2019, /r/dankmemes revived the [Intensifies] format with dense Google Maps screenshots2. Redditor Henrique_username's "Where can I have tea?" map hit 15,900 upvotes in two days, and the next day og-lollercopter's gun-store map captioned "[Freedom intensifies]" pulled 56,700 upvotes. Follow-ups included TopDEXTA's "[WILDLIFE INTENSIFIES]" map of Australia and PAWAAAR-'s "[Sweet Home Alabama intensifies]" post2.

How to Use This Meme

People typically pick a subject that is visibly reacting to something and either make it vibrate as a GIF or add a bracketed caption underneath in the format "[X intensifies]"1. The bracketed X is usually a gerund like "sweating" or a noun like "Freedom" describing the escalating emotion.
