She was introduced in *Animal Crossing: New Leaf* as the player's personal assistant, helping them manage their duties as town mayor2. Isabelle first appeared in *Animal Crossing: New Leaf*, which launched in Japan on November 8, 2012, and worldwide in June 20132. In the game, the player arrives in a new town and is mistakenly appointed mayor. Isabelle serves as the mayor's secretary, guiding players through town management features like Public Works Projects and Ordinances2. She also has a twin brother named Digby, who runs the Happy Home Showcase2.

Her Japanese name is Shizue, a play on the Japanese word for the shih tzu dog breed. The English name "Isabelle" is itself a pun, sounding like "is a bell," referencing the jingle bell in her hair.

How It Spread

Isabelle's meme status grew alongside *New Leaf*'s enormous commercial success. The game sold over 12 million copies, making it one of the best-selling 3DS titles, and Isabelle was featured prominently in marketing materials. Fan art of the character flooded platforms like DeviantArt, Tumblr, and Twitter almost immediately after the game's release1.

The character's meme profile spiked dramatically in late 2018 when two things happened in close proximity: Nintendo announced Isabelle as a playable fighter in *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*, and id Software revealed *Doom Eternal*. Because both announcements happened during the same Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2018, fans began creating crossover art pairing the wholesome Isabelle with the hyper-violent Doom Slayer. The contrast between the two characters drove a wave of fan art depicting them as best friends, roommates, or unlikely partners in demon-slaying.

Isabelle's inclusion in *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* in December 2018 further boosted her meme presence, as players created combo videos, reaction clips, and joke tier lists around her fighting style. Her move set, which includes using items like fishing rods and party poppers as weapons, played directly into the comedic gap between her sweet demeanor and the fighting game context.

The release of *Animal Crossing: New Horizons* in March 2020, which coincided with global COVID-19 lockdowns, brought another wave of Isabelle content. In *New Horizons*, Isabelle delivers daily island announcements, and players shared clips of her rambling about TV shows she watched instead of giving useful information.
