Jim Carrey is the Canadian-American actor whose rubber-faced 1990s comedies became one of the deepest wells of reaction images and catchphrases on the meme internet. From Ace Ventura's 'Alrighty Then' to the Dumb and Dumber limo shot, his films still supply endless raw material, while his 2015 anti-vaccine tweets and 2018 painted political portraits turned him into a meme subject in his own right.

Overview

The Carrey meme footprint splits into two lanes. The first is screencap-driven: still frames from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber get reused as image macros for exaggerated reactions, cocky retorts and rubber-faced shock. The 'Jim Carrey Limo' template lifts the intro shot of Lloyd Christmas in the tuxedo limo and gets captioned with 'Did Someone Say...' or 'My Face When Someone Says...' setups3. Urban Dictionary keeps the general 'Jim Carrey' entry alive as shorthand for rubber-faced comedic ability, with the first definition dating to January 21, 20055.

The second lane is Carrey himself as the subject. His Twitter account, opened in June 2009, became a running feed of political jabs, and starting in March 2018 he began painting and posting portraits of Republican figures like Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Sean Hannity and Donald Trump1. Each drop got amplified by news outlets and spun off its own short viral cycle, most notably the 'Sean Manatee' fish-creature portrait of Hannity, which pulled more than 5,000 retweets and 27,000 likes inside 11 hours of posting1.

Carrey's screen career started with 1984's All in Good Taste, but the meme material really begins with his 1994 run, when The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber all shipped in the same calendar year2. Those three films seeded most of the frames that image-macro communities would later mine. Dedicated MemeGenerator pages formalized the templates once meme culture caught up: an 'Alrighty Then' generator went up in July 2012, and a 'Jim Carrey Limo' generator followed on November 8, 2013, each holding hundreds to thousands of user-made captions3.

How It Spread

Carrey's first turn as a meme subject in his own right landed on August 24, 2011, when he uploaded a satirical love-declaration video aimed at Emma Stone that was quickly remixed and parodied across YouTube4. It was widely suspected of being viral marketing for his TruLife website, but the clip circulated far past any promotional intent.

The catalyst for the next big cycle was Carrey's June 30, 2015 anti-vaccine tweetstorm against California's SB277 bill, in which he called Governor Jerry Brown a 'corporate fascist.' The 'Dammit Jim' meme format emerged the next day, July 1, when Redditor whispy_farts posted a Star Trek Bones macro to r/AdviceAnimals reading 'Dammit, Jim! You're an actor, not a doctor,' picking up more than 1,900 votes in three hours; CNBC, LA Times, Rolling Stone and The Washington Post all wrote up the rant3.

The 2018 painting run kept the machine going. Carrey's March 17, 2018 portrait of Sarah Huckabee Sanders drew huge numbers on Twitter, his April 3 illustration cast Sean Hannity and Alex Jones as pro-wrestlers, and the April 16 'Sean Manatee' fish portrait pushed the cycle back into the news, getting covered by IndieWire, HuffPost, Business Insider and The Daily Dot1.

How to Use This Meme

The core Carrey templates pair a film still with an over-the-top caption. 'Jim Carrey Limo' typically uses the tuxedo-limo intro from Dumb and Dumber with a 'Did Someone Say...' or 'My Face When Someone Says...' header. 'Alrighty Then' macros usually deploy the Ace Ventura still as a slow, uncomfortable retort to something suspicious3.
