Madoka Titus, also known as Mado-Tus, is a hybrid figurine mashup joining the head and torso of Madoka Kaname from Puella Magi Madoka Magica to the muscular arms and legs of the HG Gundam AGE-1 Titus model kit. The concept started at a Tokyo plastic model meetup in November 2011 and spread across Futaba Channel and Twitter as collectors uploaded their own versions. By January 2013, Japanese otaku blogs and voice actor Tomokazu Sugita helped bring the mashup into wider figure-collecting circles.

Overview

The joke of Madoka Titus relies on visual whiplash between the pink-haired magical girl's cute upper body and the chunky, bodybuilder-shaped limbs of a Gundam suit originally designed for close-combat6. Madoka's red and white outfit lines up with the Titus's gold and red armor plating, and the clean color match is a big reason the mashup clicked with hobbyists3. Common variations include "The Perfect Madoka Titus," which uses the panicked faceplate from Frightened Madoka in a flexing pose, and the sister character Homura Spallow, who takes limbs from the HG Gundam AGE-1 Spallow kit1.

The appeal connects to a Japanese Gundam subculture tradition called MS Girl, a 1980s moe art style that imagined young women fused with mobile suits3. Hobbyists assemble the figure by attaching Titus arms and lower leg parts to a Madoka figma, with only a small modification to the waist joint needed to make the legs fit1.

The idea came out of an offline meetup for plastic model hobbyists held in Akihabara, Tokyo on November 23, 2011, where dozens of Japanese Twitter users began exchanging the arms and legs of their figmas with Gundam AGE-1 Titus parts1. Gundam fans had already mocked the Titus for its overly bulky close-combat silhouette, so the mashup read as a joke about dropping that bodybuilder mobile suit onto a tiny magical girl. Participants uploaded photos to Twitter describing the result as "Titus mode"3.

The concept moved to the /y/ (Alt-Figure) board on Futaba Channel soon after. On December 2, 2011, Futaba user @OrshieRinohanna posted a photo called "The Perfect Madoka Titus" that combined the Frightened Madoka faceplate with Titus limbs in a flexing pose, which was retweeted more than 300 times by July 20133.

How It Spread

Demand for the HG Gundam AGE-1 Titus kit climbed in response to the trend, with Amazon.co.jp reviewers mentioning they bought it specifically to try the Madoka mashup5. Local Akihabara hobby shops printed flyers listing the Madoka figma and the Titus kit side by side so customers could grab both parts in one trip4.

By January 2013, the fad reached Japanese otaku blogs. Video game news site 4Gamer reported that voice actor Tomokazu Sugita7, known for roles in Gintama and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, displayed both a Madoka Titus and a Homura Spallow in his personal figure cabinet2. Parody photos and fan illustrations spread beyond Futaba onto pixiv, Tumblr, and deviantART, where the Mado-Tus and Homu-Spallow tags carried the format forward into fan art.
