Meet Potential Man is an exploitable image macro that started on X in November 2023, editing anime and manga characters onto Superman's body with bullet-pointed lists of their unfulfilled potential. The format mocks shonen fandoms that hype characters for what they might one day do rather than what they've actually achieved.

Overview

Meet Potential Man is an exploitable image macro built around anime and manga characters that fans consider overhyped or underachieving6. The template pastes a character's head or upper body onto a heroic shot of Superman, then surrounds the figure with a bulleted list of vague promises about their future power. Recurring lines include 'if and when but never is' and the rallying cry 'Give me liberty, give me fire, give me X or I retire'1.

The joke targets shonen fandom debates where a character is endlessly hyped for a technique they haven't mastered, a form they haven't unlocked, or a rival they might one day match6. Most edits stay text-heavy, packing five to ten bullet points around the Superman silhouette so the layout reads like a fan wiki entry for someone who never actually delivers.

X user @MugenKampaWorks posted the first Potential Man edit on November 21st, 2023, featuring Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen pasted onto Superman1. The bullets around Megumi mocked common fan talking points: 'He has the potential to rival Gojo,' 'His completed domain will go crazy,' and 'He'll hit Black Flash too eventually.' The post crossed 22,000 likes over the following two years1.

The suffix-man setup wasn't brand new. X user @Ani10ii had used the same roast structure on soccer players in a post from March 16th, 2021, listing perceived faults instead of unfulfilled potential5.

How It Spread

The template jumped fandoms within a day. On November 22nd, 2023, X user @Busham0 swapped in Toshiro Hitsugaya from Bleach with bullets like 'He's just inexperienced' and 'His Bankai will be unbeatable when completed,' pulling over 1,000 likes2.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fans picked it up next. X user @JobberGodot posted a Gold Experience Requiem version on December 12th, 2023, with the line 'Give me liberty, give me fire, give me fodder Jotaro Victim Diavolo or I retire,' which passed 1,600 likes3. Naruto's Rock Lee became another recurring pick as the template rolled through shonen fandoms6.

Almost a year later, on October 13th, 2024, Redditor /u/AntiMatterLite brought Pannacotta Fugo to /r/ShitPostCrusaders and collected more than 1,200 upvotes, keeping the format alive in JoJo circles4.

How to Use This Meme

To make one, grab an image of Superman standing heroically, edit your target character's head or upper body over Superman's, and surround the figure with a bulleted list of excuses and future-tense promises about their potential. Common conventions include the 'if and when but never is' tag and the 'Give me liberty, give me fire, give me [X] or I retire' refrain lifted from the original Megumi post1.
