Melee Hell

Melee Hell is a satirical Facebook group and page started in late 2014 by Connecticut Super Smash Bros. Melee player Brookman as a shitposting spinoff of the more sober Melee Social community. Its membership pulled in top pros like Hungrybox, Mew2King and Hax, and its Fox-obsessed, 20XX-referencing photoshops helped set the tone for competitive Smash meme culture.
Overview
Content on the group runs on a small cluster of running gags: constant references to 20XX (the theoretical future in which every Melee match is Fox dittos decided by frame data), the elevation of Hax to 'lord and savior' status, and photoshopped images ribbing well-known smashers3. Posts hate on any Smash title released after Melee, and 'I main Fox' functions as a mandatory disclaimer bit inside the community1.
The humor is aggressively insider, so membership skewed toward older Smash heads who could actually catch the deep-cut references4. Urban Dictionary's entry, written from an outsider's angle, sums the group up as 'cancerous shitposting' full of 'Melee elitists and overused memes'6.
