Nerd Dog is a reaction image of a corgi with fake plastic buck teeth, photoshopped round glasses, and an upward-pointing index finger emoji, used to call out pedantic behavior.

Where did Nerd Dog come from?

The viral form came from a TikTok by @badgerfart on November 30, 2022, which spliced the dog edit into a 2014 KTLA 5 earthquake broadcast.

What does Nerd Dog mean?

The image signals that the person being replied to is acting like a stereotypical nerd, correcting trivia or being overly technical, like the plain Nerd Emoji.

How do you use Nerd Dog?

Post the image under or alongside a quoted statement you want to mock as pedantic or overconfident; variants substitute in other animals using the same glasses-and-finger template.

Is Nerd Dog still popular?

The format reached dad-text status by May 2023, when a tweet from @cowboybitchboop about her father using it earned over 203,000 likes in two days.

Nerd Dog, also known as Dog With Glasses, Raised Finger, Buck Teeth, is a corgi photoshopped with fake buck teeth, round glasses, and the upward-pointing finger emoji to look like a stereotypical nerd3. The reaction image reached viral scale in late 2022 after TikToker @badgerfart overlaid it onto a 2014 KTLA 5 earthquake broadcast2. By May 2023, Twitter users were posting screenshots of their own dads texting the picture to them6.

Overview

The base photo comes from a September 20, 2022 r/funny Reddit post by u/jdey4, which showed a corgi walking around with cheap plastic buck teeth clipped in its mouth1. Editors took that frame, photoshopped round white glasses over the dog's eyes, and placed the upward index-finger emoji next to its face. That look mirrors the Nerd Emoji Raising Finger template that had already gone viral in Brazil earlier that year3.

Nerd Dog posts typically reply to someone being pedantic, offering unsolicited corrections, or stating trivia with too much seriousness. The image works like the ackchyually character or the plain nerd emoji, standing in for a stereotypical 'well, actually' response3. Captions often lead with the pedantic quote and place the dog underneath as the implied speaker, or paste it over a tweet being mocked4.

Three separate pieces fed into the finished meme. KTLA 5's YouTube channel uploaded footage of anchors Chris Schauble and Megan Henderson reacting to a live earthquake on March 17, 2014, with Schauble raising his finger and saying 'Earthquake. We're having an earthquake' before both ducked under the desk7. Over eight years later, on September 20, 2022, Redditor u/jdey4 shared the fake-buck-teeth corgi clip to r/funny, where it drew more than 31,000 upvotes1.

The combined edit arrived on November 30, 2022, when TikToker @badgerfart published a video splicing the KTLA earthquake clip with the dog, now wearing photoshopped glasses and holding the index finger emoji aloft at the same moment Schauble raises his own hand2. That TikTok reached more than 4.3 million views within six months, and whether @badgerfart assembled the dog composite themselves or found it elsewhere is not documented3.

How It Spread

Streamer attention widened the audience quickly. On December 5, 2022, YouTube channel El Pepegalino uploaded a clip of xQc watching the TikTok, which drew about 67,000 views9. Twitter picked up the isolated image through early 2023, with user @rodricarreraaa posting a static version on February 4 that earned over 58,600 likes4.

Animal-remix variants showed up next. Tumblr user teathattast published a set of other animals edited in the same nerd style on March 4, 2023, collecting around 900 notes8. YouTuber squewe folded the KTLA edit into a 'Top 5 Nerd' compilation on March 30, which reached over 875,000 views5.

Dad texts marked Nerd Dog's crossover moment. On May 23, 2023, Twitter user @cowboybitchboop screenshotted a message from her father using the image, writing 'MY FUXKING DAD KEEPS USING THIS PIC IM CRYINGGGG.' That post earned over 203,000 likes within two days6.

How to Use This Meme

To use Nerd Dog, pair the image with a pedantic quote, a correction, or an obvious fact stated with excessive confidence. Common captions put the quote on top and the dog image below as the implied speaker. Variants often substitute other animals, like cats or ducks, with the same glasses-plus-finger treatment, following the template teathattast collected in a March 2023 Tumblr set8.
