Overview

Dog With Apple Apple Dog, also called Apple Dog or Dog Eating Apple, is built around one photo: a dachshund in a blue sweater standing in an apple orchard with a red apple clamped in its mouth and more apples scattered on the ground1. The image on its own is just wholesome dog content, but what turned it into a meme was a deliberately garbled caption pairing it with the line 'This Dock Is Holding an April in Its Melt'2.

TikTok

That mangled sentence became the actual joke. People latched onto the phonetic misspellings, treating the caption as a template where any noun could be swapped into the same broken grammar3. The Apple Dog image and its catchphrase then jumped platforms, picking up remixes across fandoms and eventually mutating into a wave of AI-generated videos in late 20244.

The base photo first surfaced on April 22nd, 2013, when an unknown Imgur user posted it with the straightforward caption 'Look! I got you an apple!' The upload sat quietly for years, eventually racking up over 7,700 views and 2,700 upvotes on the platform1. It also spread on Tumblr the next day through user bunnyfood, whose reblog gathered more than 216,700 notes over the following decade4.

The meme version arrived on November 15th, 2023, when X user @brokenbyrds posted the same dachshund photo with the caption 'This Dock Is Holding an April in Its Melt,' pulling in over 6,300 retweets and 28,000 likes2. That phrasing was itself a callback to a November 21st, 2022 tweet from @Twizzwald that captioned an image of a dog with an egg on its head 'This dock is holding a Greg on its Held,' establishing the deliberately misspelled sentence structure the Apple Dog tweet borrowed3.

How It Spread

Through late 2023, X users started using the Apple Dog image and its 'This Dock' caption as an exploitable template. On December 23rd, 2023, X user @KIRBYSWARPSTAR swapped in Kirby fan art using the same format, gaining over 30 retweets and 120 likes5. A One Piece edit followed on January 17th, 2024 from @ArcheopsEnjoyer, which pulled in more than 440 retweets and 2,900 likes4.

TikTok picked the joke up in spring 2024. On April 27th, TikToker @funnytextohh posted a song built around funny text threads that opened with the 'This Dock' tweet, and the video collected over 137,000 likes in two months6. The song spawned its own remix trend, including a May 21st, 2024 Sonic the Hedgehog animation from @underratedgrapejuice that hit around 24,000 likes4.

The format got a completely different second life in late 2024 through AI video. On November 30th, 2024, TikToker @artsdd6 ran the Apple Dog image through the Minimax generator from Hailuo AI, producing a clip of the dog getting startled by a man and bolting through a forest, with the apples in the base image swapped for the Wapple. That video pulled roughly 2.8 million plays and 393,900 likes in five days4. Days later, on December 3rd, TikToker @waaaxe posted a Minimax version in which the dog drops the apple and turns to face a swirling black void, and it racked up more than 7.8 million plays and 1.4 million likes inside three days4.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically pairs the original dachshund photo, or a fan-edit of it, with a caption written in the deliberately broken 'This Dock Is Holding an April in Its Melt' cadence. Common convention is to keep the same rhythm and phonetic misspellings while swapping the subject, the object, or the body part being held, so a Kirby edit or One Piece edit still reads as an Apple Dog remix. The late 2024 AI wave often skipped the caption entirely and just fed the Apple Dog image into Minimax with a short prompt describing what happens next.
