In October 2017, Kim Kardashian West posted a photo of her mother Kris Jenner sporting a fresh platinum blonde crop, white fur stole and a martini, captioned simply 'Caption this.' Twitter turned the image into a caption-contest image macro overnight, one of the standout celebrity meme moments of that fall.

Overview

The image at the center of the meme shows Kris Jenner lounging on a couch in a rose-print silk pant-and-jacket set, a white fur stole draped over one shoulder, black square-frame sunglasses, cherry red boots, a red alligator Birkin bag and a dirty martini in hand1. The blonde crop was a sharp break from the jet-black pixie she had worn since Keeping Up with the Kardashians premiered in 20071.

Users treated the picture as a caption-contest template, writing punchlines that leaned on the pose's rich, unbothered energy. Early replies compared Kris to Cruella de Vil ('Bring me the Dalmatians,' 'Jasper and Horace work for me now') and to Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada2. Kim's own caption, 'Caption this.... mine is SWF,' referenced the 1992 film Single White Female, which fans read as a hint at the rumored breakup with longtime boyfriend Corey Gamble1.

On October 23, 2017, Kim Kardashian West posted the photo of her 61-year-old mother to Instagram and Twitter with the caption 'Caption this.... mine is SWF'3. The SWF tag pointed to Single White Female, where one character copies another's exact haircut and color, playing on the fact that Kim herself had gone platinum for New York Fashion Week weeks earlier1. Writers noted it was unclear whether Kris had actually dyed her hair or was simply wearing a wig, possibly as an early Halloween look3.

The tweet drew more than 9,500 retweets and 65,000 likes in under 24 hours4. Kris Jenner is the subject of the meme, not its creator; the image macro format was built collectively by Twitter users writing captions on top of Kim's photo.

How It Spread

Captions started flooding the replies within hours of Kim's post. @austinforeman00 wrote "'Your broke' First off all…" and drew more than 1,500 retweets in a day4. @back2boujee_ tweeted 'Kris Jenner is a mood' for more than 3,100 retweets4. @HayesBrown ran the format as a barber-shop script, 'KRIS JENNER: give me the "you're damn right i stole those puppies" BARBER: say no more, fam,' pulling in over 2,400 retweets4.

Twitter itself compiled the reactions into a Moments page the same day, and Mashable published a roundup of the top captions4. Within 48 hours the story jumped from meme timelines to fashion and celebrity press, with writeups in Vogue1, Allure2, US Magazine3, Entertainment Tonight and Elle4. Coverage framed the look two ways at once: as a possible signal about Kris's relationship with Corey Gamble1, and as a mother-daughter styling moment mirroring Kim's own platinum dye job for New York Fashion Week3.
