Overview

Rizz is short for "charisma," pulled from the middle syllable of the word1. In slang, having "rizz" means natural romantic game, while "unspoken rizz" narrows it to pulling someone through looks or presence alone without needing to say a word1. Urban Dictionary's original entry defined the variant as attracting girls "without talking because of your looks"1.

The term started as New York City street slang, hit online popularity through Twitch streamers, and by December 2023 was picked as Oxford Languages' Word of the Year based on a public poll of 32,000 readers2. Kai Cenat is generally credited as the streamer who took it mainstream4.

Twitch streamers Kai Cenat and Silky started using "rizz" on live e-dating streams in May 2021, taking turns calling women and rating each other's performance on a 1 to 10 scale. Silky uploaded a full recording of one such stream to YouTube on May 25, 2021, giving online viewers the reference point that fixed the word as slang for romantic charm3.

Urban Dictionary user Ragingx2 posted the first written entry on June 1, 2021, quoting Kai's line, "Indeed! You know me I got maad Rizz"1. Kai Cenat's first public tweet using the word came on June 11, when he posted, "Imma be on silky's stream tonight IRL let's see who really got RIZZ…"4.

How It Spread

Kai kept the bit alive through summer and fall 2021 with joint streams and a recurring segment called the "Rizz Academy," an imagined classroom where he coached viewers on their game3. The specific "unspoken" variant surfaced on September 1, 2021, when fellow Twitch streamer Duke Dennis quote-tweeted a post captioned "Unspoken Rizz," attaching the phrase to cases where no words are needed3.

TikTok pushed the term out of streamer circles. In late April 2022, TikToker thekidsmitty posted a beach video testing his unspoken rizz on girls that pulled roughly 1.8 million plays and 231,700 likes in four weeks5. Older Twitter users noticed and started asking what it meant, with one May 11 tweet from user OvOBrezzzy grumbling, "It's grown men out here using tik tok slangs now Wtf is Rizz."

By late 2022, spinoffs including Rizz God, Negative Rizz, and Rizz Nicknames like The Rizzler and The Rizzard of Oz were trending on TikTok in their own right5. The word crossed fully into mainstream English when Oxford Languages picked "rizz" as its Word of the Year on December 4, 20232.

How to Use This Meme

The phrase is typically used as a compliment or self-descriptor about pulling romantic attention with no visible effort. Common conventions include reaction clips where a friend narrates the moment ("This guy has unspoken rizz"), self-deprecating captions from users claiming "negative rizz," and pun nicknames built off the word like "The Rizzler"5. The "unspoken" prefix flags cases where no line was delivered and only presence or looks did the work1.
