Satania (full name Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell) is a demon character from the winter 2017 anime Gabriel DropOut whose constant on-screen humiliation made her a fixture of 'no bully' reaction images. Fans latched onto her comically bad luck and turned her into an ironic mascot for pity posts across anime forums and Twitter.

Overview

The joke works because Satania sets herself up as an evil archdemon out to torment humanity, then keeps getting outsmarted by dogs, rival demons, and bread thieves in the same episode 2. Fans repost screencaps of her crying, screaming, or panicking with the caption 'no bully' 3. Common formats include four-panel comic edits and reaction images where her wide-eyed distress stands in for genuine misery.

The character also spawned side-jokes that stuck to her permanently. Urban Dictionary contributors describe her as 'the best waifu ever' and repeatedly float the running gag that she 'is actually a trap' 5, both of which turned into recurring bits on 4chan's /a/ board and in fanart threads.

2017

Satania appears in the first episode of Gabriel DropOut, which aired on Japanese TV on January 9, 2017 as part of the winter 2017 anime block 1. The show, produced by studio Doga Kobo and based on a manga by Ukami, follows four angels and demons attending high school on Earth 1. Satania debuts as a self-proclaimed archdemon whose evil plans immediately fall apart 2, with a clip of her getting startled and bitten by a Shiba Inu circulating as early meme material 4.

How It Spread

Clips of Satania's misfortunes started spreading on 4chan's /a/ board and anime Twitter within days of the first episode airing, and the 'no bully' tag attached to her almost immediately 3. Fanart of her looking distressed, chibi-fied, or being comforted by dogs circulated through Japanese art Twitter in early 2017.

Know Your Meme documents Satania alongside earlier 'no bully' character targets like Umaru and Kanna 3, slotting her into an existing anime-fandom template for cute characters fans want to protect. The anime wrapped its 12-episode run in March 2017 1, and the 'no bully Satania' image set stayed a reference point in the show's fandom long after airing.
