Savage Patrick is a reaction image of Patrick Star mid-cackle, ripped from a 1999 SpongeBob SquarePants episode and remixed in February 2018 into one of the year's biggest edgy-caption formats. What started as a single Twitter post exploded across Reddit within days and became the go-to image macro for petty revenge jokes.

Overview

Savage Patrick, also called Evil Patrick or Angry Patrick, is a cropped still of Patrick Star hunched forward with a wide, sinister grin, mid-chuckle. The image reads as pure petty malice, which is exactly why 2018 Twitter grabbed it as a reaction to stories about small acts of revenge, spite, or cruel satisfaction1.

The format typically pairs the image with a two-part caption: a setup describing a slight or minor grievance, and a punchline describing a wildly disproportionate retaliation. Users also flipped the joke by pairing it with the innocent, smiling Patrick from earlier in the same scene to show a shift from friendly to unhinged3. Dorkly noted at the time that the meme leaned harder into edgy and dark territory than most SpongeBob reaction images before it6.

The still comes from the Season 1 SpongeBob SquarePants episode 'Nature Pants,' which first aired on September 11, 1999, with the frame appearing around the 7:10 mark8. Nickelodeon created the source material; no individual fan is confirmed as the person who first cropped it into meme form.

The image began circulating as a meme in late February 2018. One of the earliest known posts using it came from Twitter user @bvercetti_ on February 26, 2018, which pulled in over 4,600 retweets and 18,000 likes1. Later the same day, Twitter user @2xfly posted the inverse setup pairing happy Patrick with Savage Patrick, gaining more than 2,700 retweets3.

How It Spread

Two days after the initial post, @LIBGyal tweeted a version on February 28, 2018, that blew past everything before it with over 58,000 retweets and 162,000 likes2. That tweet is often credited with pushing the format from a niche Twitter joke into a full viral moment. On March 1, 2018, Dorkly ran a write-up cataloging the darker captions circulating with the image6.

Reddit picked it up next. A post on r/dankmemes on March 1, 2018, using the format cleared 21,000 upvotes4. The following day, an r/BlackPeopleTwitter post titled 'No I'm Dirty Dan' racked up more than 9,900 upvotes in 14 hours5. Coverage on Know Your Meme documented the cross-platform jump from Twitter to Reddit as the format's defining moment7.

The meme settled into the standard SpongeBob reaction rotation alongside Mocking SpongeBob and Handsome Squidward, and it is still reached for whenever someone wants to caption a story about petty vengeance.
