What does Shungite mean?

Urban Dictionary sums it up as "a weird rock that Dr Disrespect loves" and as stones that "anti vaxxers, flat earthers and internet streamers with mustaches" think shield against 5G.

How do you use Shungite?

People typically pair Dr DisRespect's "2 billion year old rock" copypasta with photoshops of his face on chunks of the mineraloid.

Is Shungite still popular?

The meme peaked in May 2020 during the Dr DisRespect Twitch broadcast and the ensuing xQc exchange, and mostly lives on as a nostalgic clip reference.

Shungite is a Twitch-era meme built around a monologue from streamer Dr DisRespect, who in April 2020 explained to his audience that he had scattered pyramids of the 2-billion-year-old rock around his house to block "unwanted frequencies." Rival streamer xQc mocked the segment weeks later, branding him "Shungite Andy," and the mineraloid's name became internet shorthand for tinfoil-hat pseudoscience.

Overview

Shungite is a black, carbon-rich mineraloid from the Karelia region of Russia that spawned an internet meme in April 2020 after Twitch streamer Dr DisRespect rambled about using it to block "unwanted frequencies" during a livestream1. Sellers in the crystal healing community had already spent years marketing shungite pyramids and cubes as EMF and 5G "protection," warning buyers about cell towers and electrical infrastructure2. That backdrop is what made the monologue funny to viewers, who recognized the pseudoscience the moment Dr DisRespect started explaining his "2 billion year old" rocks1.

The clip turned the word into Twitch shorthand for tinfoil-hat energy, and Urban Dictionary entries soon defined shungite as "a weird rock that Dr Disrespect loves"4.

The mineraloid was named in 1879 after the Karelian village of Shunga, though locals had used it as a folk medical treatment since the early 1700s, when Peter the Great built a shungite spa near a Karelian deposit and had his troops drink water purified with the stone3. In the 2010s, alongside the crystal healing revival, vendors began pitching the rock as a shield against electromagnetic fields, warning of health risks around cell towers and, later, 5G equipment2.

How It Spread

On April 27th, 2020, Dr DisRespect used part of a Just Chatting stream on Twitch to tell viewers he had bought a "whole bunch of shungite" and placed "little pyramids" around his house to guard against "unwanted frequencies traveling in the air"1. In the same session he mocked rival streamer xQc for watching YouTube between marathon game streams1.

On May 20th, 2020, xQc fired back from his own Twitch channel, coining the "Shungite Andy" nickname and calling out Dr DisRespect for lecturing from "the top of his four-hour horse"3. The next day, Redditor Dwez1337 posted a shungite joke to r/forsen that pulled nearly 500 upvotes, and Twitter user Flar3fir3 photoshopped Dr DisRespect's face directly onto a lump of the rock, with follower leafy_faze replying with the full monologue as a copypasta3.

How to Use This Meme

Fans typically paste the "2 billion year old rock" copypasta into Twitch chat when someone shares an unhinged pseudoscience take, often paired with a photoshop of Dr DisRespect's face grafted onto a shungite pyramid1.
