TriHard

2012image macroclassic

Published October 3, 2026

TriHard is a Twitch emote based on a 2012 convention photograph of speedrunner Mychal "TriHex" Jefferson making a wide, excited face while holding a Dragon Ball wall scroll. After fans spammed the picture into Twitch emote polls for years, it got added to the platform and later turned into one of Twitch's most argued-over emotes thanks to the "TriHard 7" salute variant.

Overview

The emote is a cropped headshot of Jefferson wide-eyed and open-mouthed, a pose that reads as pure hype in chat2. On Twitch it typically gets spammed when something exciting happens on stream, when a streamer is trying extra hard at a game, or as a hello to someone appearing on camera4.

A later variant pastes the number "7" and a helmet onto the face, a reference meant as a salute6. That variant, called TriHard 7, picked up a second and more hostile usage in chats, where it got spammed any time a Black person appeared on screen7. Jefferson, who is Black, has spoken publicly about refusing to let the racist usage define the emote1. The format also spawned WideHardo, a FrankerFaceZ emote that stretches TriHex's face onto a Peepo body and added to the service in early 20194.

In June 2012, Twitch streamer Mychal "TriHex" Jefferson attended the Akon-23 anime convention in Dallas, Texas, where he posed for a photo with a fan while holding up a Dragon Ball wall scroll and pulling an exaggerated excited face4. The picture itself was just a convention snapshot, not an attempt at making an emote.

The name "TriHard" came later, from Jefferson's speedrunning career. In a 2017 Kotaku interview, Jefferson traced the nickname to a 2014 Yoshi's Island run; his three-hour, 20-minute 100 percent performance at Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 made him a star in the scene1. Jefferson himself posted a YouTube explainer, "How did TriHard, the twitch emote, happen?" on February 24, 2014, walking through how the convention photo turned into a Twitch emote campaign2.

How It Spread

After the 2012 photo surfaced, TriHex's fans kept dumping the face into Twitch's emote submission threads until it was added to the site4. Jefferson's own 2014 video explaining the backstory passed 100,000 views over the next few years2. In September 2016, the original convention photo was reposted to the /r/Ice_Poseidon subreddit, where it drew over 120 points and a batch of comments arguing about its roots5.

Mainstream recap coverage followed. On September 15, 2017, theScore esports published "What is TriHard?: The Story Behind Twitch's Most Controversial Emote," which pulled in more than 290,000 views in four months3. Kotaku's 2017 profile of Jefferson framed him as a speedrunner fighting to reclaim his own face from the chats that spammed it as a slur1.

The TriHard 7 variant pushed the emote into open controversy. Redditor Wahido11 posted a photoshopped version of TriHex wearing a helmet with a "7" to /r/loltyler1 on January 8, 2018, titled "Salute to all my European brothers who gonna stay awake"6. On March 9, 2018, Twitter user @blakinola tweeted that TriHard 7 was spammed "every time a black dude is on stream"7. That same stretch, streamer xQcOW faced suspension over using TriHard 7 while Overwatch League reporter Malik Forte was on camera, and DBLTap reported the next day that Overwatch League moderators were permabanning anyone typing "TriHard 7" in chat8.

Frequently Asked Questions

TriHard is a Twitch emote featuring the face of streamer and speedrunner Mychal "TriHex" Jefferson pulling a wide, open-mouthed excited expression from a 2012 convention photo4.

The source photo was taken in June 2012 at the Akon-23 anime convention in Dallas, Texas, where TriHex posed with a Dragon Ball wall scroll; the name itself was tied to his Yoshi's Island speedrunning years later12.

In chat it means hype or an excited greeting, often sent when a streamer is trying very hard at a game; the TriHard 7 variant adds a helmet and a "7" as a salute but also picked up a documented racist usage67.

Twitch viewers typically spam TriHard in chat during exciting stream moments or when a streamer tries extra hard; TriHard 7 is often used as a salute among chat regulars4.

It is a classic Twitch emote that stayed in heavy chat rotation through the late 2010s and spawned the WideHardo FrankerFaceZ variant in 20194.
