The seed of the trend was laid in June 2018, when YandereDev posted two Yandere Simulator development updates on YouTube and disabled the comment sections after they filled with complaints about missing features and his split with publisher tinyBuild1. On June 11th, 2018, YandereDev published a blog post admitting he had been "immature, cringey, and embarrassing" in his late teens and early twenties, which pushed critics on Reddit and Discord to dig up more of his old material1.

How It Spread

The category stayed niche for over a year. On June 10th, 2019, Twitter user @SeasonalPhotos posted an "Are Ya Winning, Son?" edit using an old YandereDev photo, and on November 20th, 2019, @ShibeAlt_92 reposted a similar meme that pulled roughly 4,300 retweets and 22,600 likes2. The following day, @blarksyy dropped the image inside YandereDev's Discord and reported being banned within seconds, kicking off a wave of copycat runs2.

Runners including @Murbles535, @LenticCloudline and @velourina posted screenshots and clips of their bans across late November 20192. On November 23rd, YouTuber terminus reuploaded the now-infamous "milk goblet" clip, self-recorded by YandereDev sometime before February 2010, and it pulled over 254,000 views in two months2. Tenor GIFs of the same clip became a popular ban-triggering payload by the end of December 20192.

The format peaked in early 2020. On January 18th, 2020, @JonVaginal tweeted about a nine-second run that pulled more than 5,200 retweets, and on January 19th, YouTuber Bonkinson released a Summoning Salt-style "World Record Progression" documentary that pulled over 792,500 views2.
