Redditor xiixxkxksksks posted a copypasta titled "gas station sushi" to r/copypasta on May 23rd, 2020, where it picked up around 25 upvotes over the next three years1. The text ran through the whole escalating sequence from sushi to insurrection in a single breathless block.

One day later, on May 24th, 2020, YouTuber RASU uploaded a video performance of the copypasta in which a man recites a loose version of it to a woman with their foreheads pressed together, a clip that logged more than 789,000 views over the following three years2. A June 5th crosspost to r/perfectlycutscreams added over 1,300 upvotes5.

Animators then took the audio and ran. On August 27th, 2020, YouTuber polypawns posted an animated version set to the clip that reached over 2.5 million views in three years3. On November 10th, 2020, TikToker @ant_al_el followed with another animation that cleared 3.4 million views6. A Roblox animation by PaperKitty, uploaded February 14th, 2021, added more than 416,000 views in two years4, and a Jacksepticeye reaction clip reposted on June 25th, 2021 by tricøgaming65 drew over 150,000 views7.
