Overview

Am I The Only One Around Here is an advice animal image macro featuring a screenshot of Walter Sobchak, played by John Goodman in the 1998 Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski1. The frame catches Walter mid-motion, drawing a handgun with an expression of pure exasperation. Captions follow the fixed template "Am I the only one around here who..." finished with whatever small grievance the poster wants to broadcast2.

The macro also circulates under the alternate name Angry Walter, and both titles point back to the same John Goodman screenshot4. What makes it land is the visual gap between the mundane gripe in the caption and the disproportionate menace of Walter reaching for a firearm over it5.

The image is pulled from a bowling alley scene in The Big Lebowski, in which Walter loses his temper at a fellow bowler who steps over the foul line, eventually drawing a pistol and shouting "Am I the only one around here who gives a shit about the rules?"1. The first image macro built around the character was posted by Redditor BFM11 to /r/AdviceAnimals on March 24th, 2012, under the title "Angry Walter"1. That early version complained about the misuse of the word "literally" and used a different frame from the film4.

How It Spread

The specific "Am I the only one around here who..." caption format took off about a month later. On April 23rd, 2012, Redditor phizzleout posted a macro to /r/AdviceAnimals reading "Am I the only one around here / who doesn't upvote reposts?"2. Within two hours, another Redditor named TLAMP28 submitted a near-identical macro complaining about same-day reposts, and the template started snowballing across the subreddit3.

Over the following weeks the format jumped to We Know Memes, MemeCrunch, ZipMeme, and Tumblr tags dedicated to both "angry walter" and the longer catchphrase4. By July 2012, the Quickmeme page for Am I The Only One Around Here listed 1,851 submissions, the parallel Angry Walter page had 3,693, and Memegenerator carried another 262 entries5 6 7.

How to Use This Meme

Users typically pair the Walter screenshot with a two-line caption in the classic advice animal split. The top line reads "Am I the only one around here" and the bottom line finishes the thought with a niche pet peeve. Common conventions include complaints about grammar, etiquette, or platform behavior like reposts2.
