Overview

Angry Jigglypuff is a reaction image lifted from the first trailer for the live-action Detective Pikachu film, in which a furry, photorealistic 3D Jigglypuff scowls at a bar crowd that has fallen asleep during its song1. The pout is a direct callback to the same grumpy face Jigglypuff pulls in the Pokémon anime whenever its lullaby knocks its audience out cold3.

The joke does most of its work through contrast. The character's cutesy anime silhouette gets rendered with visible fur, glassy eyes, and a very human sulk, which made the freeze-frame instantly screencap-friendly. Twitter users started sharing the still within hours of the trailer going live, treating it as a mood image for being ignored, bombing at karaoke, or simply having a bad shift1.

Warner Bros. Pictures posted the first Detective Pikachu trailer to YouTube on November 12, 20182. About midway through the two-minute preview, Jigglypuff hops onto a lounge stage, starts singing, and turns to glare at the bar patrons once they slump onto their tables. The shot lasts only a few seconds, but it was the moment most viewers latched onto in the trailer's initial reception3.

How It Spread

The angry freeze-frame flooded Twitter almost immediately. User @isirikul called the expression a "goddamn mood" in a tweet that pulled more than 1,600 retweets and 5,000 likes, while @EscoBlades joked that Jigglypuff looked like someone had just asked it to sing Toto's "Africa"3. @SaraSorrentino compared the character to a washed-up lounge singer past its prime, racking up over 3,700 retweets and 11,000 likes3. The Daily Dot rounded up the earliest wave of reactions the same week.

A parallel joke thread popped up comparing Jigglypuff to Ally Maine, Lady Gaga's character in A Star Is Born, which had opened in theaters about a month earlier. Users photoshopped Jigglypuff into scenes from the film, with @WhitneyM02 posting a dialogue mashup that pulled more than 3,200 retweets and 10,000 likes and @joeynolfi's version passing 3,400 retweets1. Mashable covered the crossover a day after the trailer dropped, writing that Jigglypuff "just fits so well" into the movie's musical drama scenes1. The A Star Is Born parodies were also picked up by Guacamoley4.

How to Use This Meme

The meme is typically deployed as a reaction image. Users often post the still on its own to signal quiet, seething irritation, or drop it in reply to being ghosted, ignored mid-story, or shown up at karaoke. A common convention is to caption the image with something the poster wishes they could say out loud, or to photoshop the scowling Jigglypuff into scenes from other movies and music videos in the style of the original A Star Is Born mashups1.
