BFDI Mouth

Spotting the cartoon mouth from the YouTube series Battle for Dream Island in unrelated thumbnails, Roblox games, and even BattleBots robots became a running joke among the show's fans in late 2019. Because creator JackNJellify published the show's Flash asset pack for free download, the simple black grin drifted onto clip art sites, YouTuber overlays, and Discord GIF edits through 2023.

Overview

JackNJellify's object-show series published its full Flash source files and PNG assets on bfdi.tv, where anyone can grab the mouth graphics for free3. Over the 2010s, thumbnail artists, Roblox developers, and advertisers started pulling the mouth off clip art repositories like PinClipArt and StickPNG and sticking it onto unrelated characters, because it was simply the top result when someone searched for a cartoon smile4.

Fans turned those sightings into a bit, screenshotting any thumbnail, toy package, or music video where the familiar grin showed up out of context. A second strain of the meme works as an exploitable: editors paste the mouth over characters in cartoon GIFs or film clips and sync its open-close shape to sound effects for comedic effect9. The joke lands because the flat, cheerful mouth looks absurd grafted onto live action or 3D footage.

Battle for Dream Island, the animated competition series by JackNJellify about anthropomorphic objects, premiered its first episode "Take the Plunge" on YouTube on January 1, 20101. The specific mouth asset shows up even earlier, in JackNJellify's May 5, 2008 YouTube animation "I Can Make a Difference!"2. JackNJellify made the Flash source files and PNG assets publicly downloadable on bfdi.tv3, and across the 2010s the mouth filtered onto generic clip art sites where unrelated creators grabbed it for their own projects4.

How It Spread

On September 24, 2019, Redditor bleepitybloop555 noticed BattleBots competitor Nelly wearing a familiar grin and posted the photo to r/BattleForDreamIsland, where it hit over 140 upvotes5. JackNJellify noticed and reposted the sighting on Twitter the next day6. About a week later, redditors zaydenmYT and ljcool2006 opened r/BFDI_assets as a dedicated spotting log4.

Twitter user @DipsumValley brought the trend to a bigger audience on April 25, 2022, asking why the same mouth clip art kept showing up in Roblox and YouTube content. Replies identified it as the BFDI asset, and the post hit over 460 reposts and 3,900 likes within two years7. JackNJellify answered the question directly on November 21, 2022 with the YouTube special "Why is the BFDI Mouth Everywhere?" which catalogued appearances on MatPat and Nostalgia Critic videos and passed 2 million views8.

On August 12, 2023, X user @exclam0 posted a compilation of Discord-made GIF edits featuring the mouth over cartoon and film clips with added sound effects, scoring over 1,300 reposts and 5,200 likes9.

How to Use This Meme

Spotters typically screenshot a thumbnail, product label, or video frame that contains the mouth and post it to r/BFDI_assets with the suspect smile circled. For the exploitable variant, editors paste the mouth over a character's face in a GIF or film clip, usually syncing the open-close animation to dialogue, music, or a sound effect9.
