Overview

Carmen Sandiego is the red trench coated master thief at the center of an educational video game series that sends players chasing her around real world locations while quietly teaching them geography3. Her VILE organization, short for Villains International League of Evil, is staffed by goofy henchmen with pun heavy aliases like 'M.T. Pockets' and 'Rob M. Blind,' and their assignments run to absurd targets such as the pyramids of Giza or the banks of the Nile4.

Her look is instantly recognizable, a red fedora with a yellow band, a matching trench coat, and heels, with her eyes almost never shown in official artwork5. The character is coded as hispanic and framed as a thief who steals for the challenge rather than out of malice, which is why later versions could quietly recast her as a heroine without breaking the concept2.

Carmen debuted in the 1985 Broderbund computer game 'Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?', developed by David Siefkin4. Broderbund followed the hit with 'Where in the USA Is Carmen Sandiego?' (1986), 'Where in Europe Is Carmen Sandiego?' (1988), 'Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego?' (1989), and 'Where In Space Is Carmen Sandiego?' (1993), all built around the same 'chase Carmen and learn about the world' hook3.

How It Spread

PBS turned the game into the live action children's quiz show 'Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?' which aired from September 30, 1991 to December 22, 1995, with Lynne Thigpen as the ACME chief giving clues to kid contestants4. The a cappella group Rockapella performed the theme song, which became the show's calling card5.

Fox followed with the animated series 'Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?', which ran for 40 episodes between 1994 and 19981. Netflix rebooted the franchise on January 18, 2019 as its own animated series starring Gina Rodriguez, this time recasting Carmen as a young adult raised inside VILE Academy who turns 'white hat' and starts stealing back cultural artifacts from her former bosses2. Netflix and rights holder Houghton Mifflin Harcourt also lined up a Rodriguez led live action film alongside a new HMH book series in 20191.
