Overview

The visual is dead simple: a plain house cat framed as a silent voyeur peering down through what looks like a cat-shaped hole in the ceiling1. The classic macro pairs the photo with the caption 'Ceiling Cat is watching you masturbate' set in bold LOLcat-style Impact text, with the joke landing entirely on how straight-faced the cat looks about the whole thing.

Photoshoppers on 4chan's /b/ board treated the cat-shaped opening as an exploitable, cutting the tabby into religious paintings, horror stills and mundane living rooms3. Urban Dictionary's entry called Ceiling Cat 'the feline god of ceiling catism,' a deity who blesses cats with 'couches, houses, domestic servants (known as hoomans) and cheezburgers'2. The LOLCat Bible project ran with the divine framing and cast Ceiling Cat as the LOLspeak equivalent of God, with a black cat called Basement Cat playing the devil.

Representing early cat image culture, Ceiling Cat provided a visual metaphor for surveillance, judgment, or secret observation.

How to Use This Meme

To make a classic Ceiling Cat macro, place the original photo at the top of the image and add bold white Impact text with a black stroke reading a variation of 'Ceiling Cat is watching you [verb]'2. Photoshop remixers often cut the cat-and-hole out entirely and paste it into an unrelated scene, letting the tabby loom over a religious painting, a movie still or a family photo.
