In late January 2024, TikToker Carringtonxx recorded a fake FaceTime call pretending to be a girlfriend's parolee boyfriend, shouting "Darling, guess who's back from jail?" as part of the "Use this sound in an Uber if you feel unsafe" trend1. The clip hit 30.6 million plays in under three weeks, and by mid-February 2024 the audio was being lip-synced in BookTok videos, therapy jokes and real Uber rides3.

Overview

Darling Guess Who's Back From Jail is a TikTok audio clip in which creator Carringtonxx, also known as SwagBoy, bellows the title line while playing a cartoonishly menacing "Prison Boyfriend" character on a staged FaceTime call1. The sound belongs to the "Use this sound in an Uber if you feel unsafe" category of videos, where women play audio of fake intimidating men to deter creepy drivers2.

Most reuses of the audio fall into two buckets. One is sincere, with riders filming themselves holding a phone up in a car and letting the clip blast as a protective bluff4. The other is a joke pivot, where the audio is dubbed over an everyday scene so the "return from jail" lands as an absurd punchline for something mundane, like leaving a therapy appointment or finishing a romance novel2.

On January 31st, 2024, @carringtonxx posted the original TikTok with on-screen text reading "Use this sound if you feel unsafe in an Uber (Prison Boyfriend)," opening with the shouted line "Darling, guess who's back from jail?"1. Within 19 days the video had drawn roughly 30.6 million plays and 4.7 million likes2.

Carringtonxx had been running the Prison Boyfriend bit since 2023 under a secondary account, with earlier sketches built around the same shouted "Darling!" greeting2. The January 2024 upload tied that recurring character to an existing safety-trend format, which is what carried it beyond his usual audience.

How It Spread

After the original TikTok took off, the audio was separated from the video and became its own sound page, letting other users dub it over anything2. On February 3rd, 2024, @hoop.reads used it for a BookTok skit that collected over 686,900 plays and 93,700 likes inside 16 days3. Six days later, @matteaing paired the clip with the moment of walking out of a therapy session, pulling in more than 178,200 plays and 11,600 likes4.

The literal "play it in an Uber" use case also kept growing. On February 10th, 2024, @giannagrazianooo filmed herself in a car with the audio running and hit 14.2 million plays and 2.9 million likes in nine days5. Four days after that, @bitcheslovejulia posted her own version from a back seat, which reached 5.7 million plays and 964,200 likes in five days6. Together those two videos put the sound in front of roughly 20 million more viewers in about two weeks.
