David Cross Stare
Published October 25, 2026
David Cross Stare, also known as The Look White People Give, is a reaction image featuring a flat, slightly annoyed headshot of actor David Cross taken around his 2007 role as Ian Hawke in Alvin and the Chipmunks. X user @indianloonie set it off on January 15, 2025, with a tweet pairing the photo with a caption about insulting Nardwuar. By early February, Instagram and X accounts were reusing the same deadpan face to caption jokes about Terrifier director Damien Leone and the US Postal Service.
Overview
Most posts stick to one of two patterns. The first uses the image to represent a white person reacting with disbelief or mild annoyance to something out of step with their taste, usually a music or culture opinion12. The second drops the whiteness angle and casts the same deadpan face as the look a bored service worker gives a customer making a request7.
Captions follow a fixed grammar: 'The look white people give when...' or '[profession] when...', with the punchline sitting entirely in whatever situation the poster picks24. The headshot itself appears to come from press materials shot around Alvin and the Chipmunks in 2007, where Cross played villainous record executive Ian Hawke3.
