Do You Ever Look at Someone and Wonder, "What Is Going On Inside Their Head?"

A line delivered by Amy Poehler's character Joy in the first trailer for Pixar's 2015 film Inside Out became a setup for YouTube and Vine joke videos within weeks of the trailer's release. By late 2018, TikTok editors paired the clip with a sped-up cut of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," turning the line into a reveal device for cats, people and characters acting unhinged.

Overview

Posts built around the catchphrase typically open with a static shot of a person, animal or cartoon character looking placid while Joy's narration from the Inside Out trailer plays1. A beat drop then cuts to a montage of the same subject acting erratic, often set to a sped-up loop of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"2. Cats staring at a wall before chaos ensues became the defining subject on TikTok3.

Earlier YouTube and Vine entries kept the setup but swapped in other punchlines, including a Gabe the Dog edit by kmlkmljkl4 and a Spider-Man Ass Slap edit by user Dyuba5. The joke rides on the gap between a calm exterior and the mental chaos the audio implies.

Date

On December 11th, 2014, Pixar released the first trailer for Inside Out, where Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, delivers the line "Do you ever look at someone and wonder: what is going on inside their head?"1. The film itself opened in June 2015, but editors did not wait for the release to lift the line.

The earliest known meme using the clip as a setup went up on October 25th, 2015, when YouTube creator kmlkmljkl paired it with a Gabe the Dog edit4. The audio half of the later remix came from a December 12th, 2016 YouTube video by WormBurn titled "Bears Dance to Sweet Dreams," which combined a PunchesBears animation with a sped-up Eurythmics track2.

How It Spread

Through late 2015 and 2016, the trailer clip stayed on YouTube and Vine as a joke setup. Dolan Dark uploaded a widely watched entry on September 9th, 20166, and Meme Republic later packaged a Vine compilation on October 13th, 2018 that collected the style7.

The shift happened in October 2018, when TikTok editors began pairing the line with WormBurn's sped-up "Sweet Dreams" cut. A TikTok by user minus.like on October 21st, 2018 is among the earliest documented examples, and TheFlaxCompany posted a Minecraft version on YouTube five days later8. According to Know Your Meme, by May 17th, 2021 the TikTok sound tagged "Inside Their Head" counted over 3 million views3.

How to Use This Meme

A common convention is to film a cat, pet or person looking perfectly normal while the trailer audio plays, then cut to clips of the same subject behaving strangely once the "Sweet Dreams" remix kicks in. Creators often loop the music under rapid cuts for the second half.
