Overview

Download More Ram is a bait phrase used on tech and gaming forums to trick users who think computer memory can be downloaded like a file, when RAM is actually a physical component installed inside a machine3. Veteran posters use it to string along newcomers who show up asking earnest questions about slow performance or low memory, treating the answer as a running in-joke rather than real help.

Central to the gag is downloadmoreram.com, a mock utility page with progress bars and file-size dropdowns that never delivers an actual file1. Urban Dictionary notes that the site's fake download button typically ends in a Rick Astley redirect, folding the whole prank into a rickroll2.

Date

2004

The earliest documented use dates to January 20, 2004, when Apple Insider user SpcMs started a thread asking where he could download more RAM for his computer, saying his machine was low on memory and he wanted to get more without paying3. Another member replied within three minutes explaining that RAM is a physical component and posted two links to retailers where memory sticks could actually be bought, which is basically the template every serious reply has followed since.

How It Spread

After the original Apple Insider thread, the same question kept resurfacing on gaming and hardware forums over the next several years, sometimes asked sincerely and sometimes posted as obvious bait for the familiar joke. Regulars started answering the question in-character, treating each new asker as either a mark or a fellow poster in on the gag.

In July 2007, someone registered the domain downloadmoreram.com and turned the phrase into a working prank site, offering fake RAM 'downloads' selectable by size and speed1. The domain gave the joke a shareable link that could be dropped into any thread about slow computers, and it kept the gag in circulation as new waves of users cycled through the same forums each year1.

How to Use This Meme

The common play is to respond to any low-memory or slow-computer question with a link to downloadmoreram.com and wait for the click1. The phrase 'just download more RAM' also gets dropped as sarcastic advice in threads where someone is clearly out of their depth on hardware. In most versions the eventual payoff is a rickroll rather than any real file2.
