Overview

Earth Chan is an anime-style anthropomorphic take on the planet Earth, drawn as a young girl whose blue and green hair is meant to echo a satellite photo of the globe1. She debuted as a throwaway Twitter joke in late 2017 and quickly turned into a full image macro series across DeviantArt and Reddit2.

Most Earth Chan pictures ride a single running gag: other characters call her 'flat,' which doubles as a jab at the flat-earth conspiracy theory and at the anime trope of girls being self-conscious about their chest size3. Later fan art added a surgical mask and pleas to stop polluting, giving the character a lightly environmental edge on top of the original joke4.

How It Spread

The character jumped platforms fast. On December 7, 2017, DeviantArt user DatWeirdoWhoLuvsMilk4 posted a set of Earth Chan drawings with a surgical mask, grafting a pollution angle onto the flat-chest joke.

Reddit picked it up next. On December 10, Redditor M4DHouse posted an image macro captioned 'When someone says Earth-Chan is flat,' paired with a screenshot from the anime Blend S of Mafuyu Hoshikawa declaring 'It seems you require a hard education'5. Two days later, on December 12, Redditor WatBoi19 posted a comic in which Earth Chan complains to a man in a NASA shirt that 'everybody call me flat,' and he answers 'Don't believe what they said, senpai. You are not flat!' The post pulled over 5,900 points and 280 comments on /r/animemes within a day3.

Once it landed on /r/animemes, Earth Chan settled in as a stock reference character for any flat-earth joke on the anime side of Reddit and became a small cottage industry of fan art and Rule 34 riffs6.

How to Use This Meme

An Earth Chan image typically shows the character upset about being called flat, with a defender, often a NASA fan, scientist, or anime senpai, reassuring her that the planet is round1. Common conventions include the blue-and-green pigtails, a green jacket, and the 'I'm not flat!' line. Environmental spins often add a surgical mask or a message about pollution4.
