Frye is a squid character in the fictional band Deep Cut, revealed as one of three Splatoon 3 hosts during a Nintendo Direct on August 10th, 2022. Her design split the Splatoon fanbase almost immediately: Twitter filled with forehead jokes and Megamind comparisons, while admiring fan art ran up thousands of likes the same day. By that evening, both @DNCHI77's roast series and @Nebula_Cone's tribute drawing had each broken past four-digit retweet counts.

Overview

The response treated Frye less as a traditional template and more as the subject of two parallel threads of fan reaction running at the same time1. On the mocking side, posts zeroed in on her tall forehead, with jokes building off visual comparisons to characters known for high foreheads such as DreamWorks' Megamind4. @DNCHI77's roast series set the tone for the forehead gags, drawing over 150 retweets within a day of her reveal3.

Running alongside the roasts, fan artists responded with flattering illustrations of Frye, often playing up her gold-trimmed Deep Cut outfit. @Nebula_Cone's August 10th piece collected more than 820 retweets and 4,000 likes within a day of posting5, while @eeveebooyah's drawing picked up over 200 retweets in a similar window6. Mashable noted that while Big Man drew near-unanimous love across Twitter, Frye split the response in a way her bandmates did not1.

Nintendo developed Splatoon 3 and announced Frye during a Nintendo Direct livestream focused on the game on August 10th, 20228. During the presentation, Deep Cut was introduced as the three-member host band of the Anarchy Splatcast and Splatfests, with Frye joining manta ray Big Man and squid Shiver2. Nintendo of America also posted individual character images for each Deep Cut member after the Direct ended2.

Nintendo authored the character, not the meme. The Twitter reaction to Frye's reveal, which treated her large forehead as the defining visual feature, came from Splatoon fans the same day the Direct aired7.

How to Use This Meme

Posts about Frye typically fell into one of two buckets: forehead-centered roasts that put her next to characters like Megamind, or straight fan art celebrating the character's design7. Jokes often cropped Frye's face against another high-forehead character for a side-by-side gag4, while fan artists tended to focus on her Deep Cut outfit and tag the piece with Splatoon 3 tags5.
