Overview

Each reply in a Google [Your Name] The Hedgehog thread works the same way: a player runs a Google Images search for their given name attached to "the hedgehog," grabs whatever fan character turns up near the top of results, and posts the image or link next to their name. The joke works because deviantART hosts huge quantities of fan-drawn Sonic original characters with every conceivable name attached, so even uncommon first names tend to return a glove-and-sneakers hedgehog someone has already drawn5.

Players often widen the format to other Sonic species, swapping "hedgehog" for fox, echidna, or similar when the first search comes up thin3. Threads lean into the cringe appeal of amateur Sonic OC art, with posters ranking whose doppelgänger looks the most unhinged. A later remix of the same bit traded Sonic for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan OCs, running on the "[name] the pony" formula7.

On September 11, 2010, IGN forum member Kirby-Star posted a thread titled "Google (Your Name) The Hedgehog" on the IGN message boards2. Replies linked to or embedded a fan-made Sonic character carrying the poster's first name, and the thread hit 17 posts before archiving. Know Your Meme lists this as the earliest documented instance of the game5.

The setup borrows from the older "Smash Face On Keyboard, Post Results" style of forum serial thread, where one player sets a repeatable task and every reply shows the result5.

How It Spread

On November 14, 2010, a near-identical thread opened on the Sega forums and ran to four pages of replies3. Two weeks later, on November 29, a VG Box Art version pointed participants at deviantART as the main source to pull from, extending to six pages4. The bit then jumped to larger communities including NeoGAF6.

In August 2013, BuzzFeed staff writer Cates Holderness published "Find Your 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Doppelgänger," a listicle that walked readers through the search and sampled results1. The piece gave Google [Your Name] The Hedgehog, Post Result its biggest mainstream writeup.

A pony variant took hold starting in 2011, with The Escapist forums running a "[name] the pony" thread7. Reddit's r/whowouldwin later posted a hedgehog-versus-pony matchup in 2014, pitting the two formats directly against each other8.

How to Use This Meme

Typical participation looks like this: a player runs a Google Images search for "[their first name] the hedgehog," grabs the first or funniest Sonic fan character on the results page, and posts the image or link back in the thread. Common conventions include adding the character's deviantART page, swapping "hedgehog" for other Sonic species like fox or echidna when a name produces nothing good, and writing a short caption mocking the resulting OC.
