Jessica Nigri broke out of the convention floor in 2009 when photos of her Pikachu cosplay from San Diego Comic-Con circulated online and turned her into one of the first cosplayers to build a massive social media following. Her career grew through IGN contest wins, video game promotional gigs, voice acting roles, and a widely covered removal from PAX 2012 that set the template for cosplay celebrity in the 2010s.

Overview

Jessica Nigri built her audience by pairing convention appearances with steady photo drops on Facebook, Twitter4, Instagram6, and YouTube. Her cosplay catalog covers video game characters like Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw and the female Edward Kenway from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag5. Outside cosplay, she picked up voice acting work with Rooster Teeth Productions, playing Cinder Fall in RWBY and Pink Private in Red vs. Blue5.

The recurring shape of her online fame is fan-driven. Subreddits, Tumblr blogs, and DeviantArt tags collect her photos and cosplay reference shots, and awkward "hover hand" convention snapshots with fans became a running joke in gaming subreddits3.

Nigri first gained wider attention at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con when she wore a Pikachu costume that circulated across gaming blogs and photo galleries5. In an interview with Cosplay in America, she said seeing her own convention photos posted online is what pushed her deeper into cosplay work2. On March 6, 2010, she posted her first YouTube upload, a short clip of her holding a magnifying glass over her mouth while making loud noises1.

How It Spread

Her social footprint built up fast across every major platform. She started her Facebook page on February 26, 2010, and the @OJessicaNigri Twitter account went live in January 20114. The /r/jessicanigri subreddit spun up on April 20 as a dedicated feed for her cosplay shots3, and Tumblr fan blogs like Fuck Yeah Jessica Nigri and Nigri Nation ran alongside a growing DeviantArt tag.

In 2012 she won IGN's "Search for Juliet" competition cosplaying Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw, which lined up a run of official cosplay gigs the following year for titles including Assassin's Creed III, KILLER IS DEAD, and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z5. That same year at Penny Arcade Expo, staff asked her to change out of a Juliet Starling costume they judged too revealing, then asked her to leave when the replacement outfit was also flagged, and the story ran through gaming news feeds for weeks.

The fan scene kept scaling. Her Instagram climbed past 550,000 followers by 20146, and a widely upvoted /r/gaming post from April 7, 2012 showing a Redditor doing an awkward "hover hand" pose next to her at a convention helped cement the running joke about fan photo etiquette around her3.
