Ken-Sama
Published October 8, 2026
Ken-Sama is a fictional American weeaboo character born from a 2009 4chan copypasta about an adult man desperate to move to Japan. The character picked up a strange afterlife, with 4chan users mourning his supposed death in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and a 2021 Twitter hoax reviving him as a 'glow-up' legend with a Japanese wife.
Overview
Ken-Sama is a fictional adult American man written as the archetypal weeaboo, a Japanophile so consumed by anime and manga that he narrates his life in broken Japanese-English like a light novel protagonist2. The copypasta pairs his first-person ramble about studying kanji, eating pocky and planning a move to Nippon with a photograph of a middle-aged white man wearing a kimono, which readers took to be Ken himself3.
The image was never originally connected to the text. It was lifted from a 2005 craft blog post about handmade kimonos written by Marisa Ebers, and the man in the photo is Ebers' husband Bradon1. That mismatch between a real person's family photo and 4chan's imagined loser otaku is a huge part of why the joke stuck, and it later caused real-world friction when Ebers filed a copyright claim against a memorial video4. Variations of the copypasta exist for other cultures, imitating the same stilted romanticized voice.
