ME!ME!ME! is a 2014 electronic pop song by Japanese producer TeddyLoid with lyrics by Daoko, released alongside a hyper-stylized animated music video through Hideaki Anno's Japan Animator Expo web series. Its suggestive imagery, pink-haired female lead Mimi and psychedelic assault of dancing girls turned it into one of the most argued-about anime shorts of the decade.

Overview

The ME!ME!ME! music video runs about six minutes and follows a checked-out young man getting pulled through a candy-colored assault of dancing girls, weapons and cake-like body horror set to TeddyLoid's four-on-the-floor synth track1. Character designer Shuichi Iseki and executive director Hibiki Yoshizaki built the piece around Mimi, a pink-haired lead whose looped facial expressions and warped anatomy did most of the visual heavy lifting1.

The tone sits between idol-anime parody and industrial nightmare, and much of the short's staying power came from viewers arguing whether it was a critique of otaku consumption or an extremely well-animated horny short2. Isolated frames of Mimi, the recurring flower-crown pose and the cake-morph transformation are still shared as reaction images and reblog fodder years after the original upload4.

A preview of the animated music video was uploaded on November 17, 2014 to the official website of Japan Animator Expo, followed by the full-length video on November 211. Japan Animator Expo was launched in late October 2014 by Hideaki Anno's Studio Khara together with Dwango as a weekly showcase for shorts by up-and-coming animators6.

TeddyLoid composed the track, Daoko wrote the lyrics, and the visuals were a joint effort by character designer Shuichi Iseki and executive director Hibiki Yoshizaki, with the official Animator Expo blurb bluntly describing the plot as a young man being attacked and ravished by many girls (translated from Japanese)1.

How It Spread

English-language anime press picked up the short within a day, with AnimeNewsNetwork running a write-up on November 18, 2014 flagging the Studio Khara connection3. A follow-up piece and a NeoGAF discussion thread carried it into wider Western anime circles across the same week2.

The video landed hardest on 4chan's /a/ board, where several discussion threads hit the 500-post cap over November 21 to 23, 2014, arguing whether Mimi was a critique of moe fandom or a straight fetish object4. Fan art blew up on pixiv and Tumblr inside the first month, and Danbooru and Gelbooru quickly built dedicated me!me!me! tags heavy with NSFW derivations4.

On May 1, 2015, TeddyLoid and Daoko released a follow-up titled ME!ME!ME! CHRONIC, with new footage VJ-reconstructed by Hibiki Yoshizaki, sankaku triangle, flapper3 and Studio Khara, keeping the original short in rotation as a reference point for Japanese online music video culture5.

How to Use This Meme

ME!ME!ME! functions as a shared visual shorthand rather than a captioned template. People typically post crops of Mimi, the flower-crown close-up or the cake-morph frame as reaction images, tag original art with me!me!me! on pixiv or Danbooru, or cite the video when discussing suggestive art-directed anime shorts and the Studio Khara style4.
