On May 23rd, 2020, Twitter artist @happyroadkill posted a late-night sketch of Regular Show's Mordecai asking if his crush Margaret sat on an empty stool, then sniffing the seat deeply. The drawing turned into a redraw template for simping jokes, with fans later recasting the gag with Aggretsuko's Haida, their own fursonas, and the anime character Brief by December 2021.

Overview

The fan art shows Regular Show's Mordecai standing beside an empty stool, blurting 'oh fuck did Margaret sit here??/?' before leaning down and sniffing the seat deeply1. The gag plays on a long-running fan reading that Mordecai acted like a simp over his coworker Margaret through much of the show's run7.

Redraws typically hold onto the same composition and the exact caption, but put a different character in Mordecai's place and change Margaret's name to a different love interest. Variants have featured anime boys, furry fursonas, and other cartoon leads sniffing after their own crushes6. Some versions rewrite the caption entirely, as with @allsortsofmeme's 'did one of my followers sit here' twist aimed at the poster's own audience2.

Twitter artist @happyroadkill shared the drawing on May 23rd, 2020, writing 'roughly cleaned n colored some rough sketches i made last night whilst under the influence' as the caption1. The tweet collected several Regular Show sketches done at the request of the artist's Discord friends, one of which showed Mordecai beside a stool, saying the line and then sniffing the seat7.

That single panel outlasted the rest of the thread and became the recurring template that other artists started redrawing with their own characters.

How It Spread

Within months of the first post, redraws began showing up with new characters. Artist sintastein made a version featuring Aggretsuko's Haida sniffing Retsuko's seat; the piece was later reuploaded to iFunny on September 29th, 20204. Instagram picked up the format in August 2020 when @allsortsofmeme reworked the caption to 'did one of my followers sit here,' earning over 1,900 likes within a year2.

Furry artist @ChanderDeerfox posted a deerfox variant on October 24th, 2020, which collected more than 2,100 likes5. In March 2021, Instagram user your.residential.goth.gf reposted the original composition and gained over 26,000 likes in under a year3.

The template reached other fandoms by late 2021. On December 20th, @professorgutsv2 published a version with Brief from Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt that drew over 1,200 likes in a month6.
