Ok Smart Guy! Let's See YOU Take A Crack At It!

Published October 8, 2026

A 2008 campaign photo of then-senator Joe Biden pointing and shouting became an exploitable image after someone pasted a two-piece smiley-face puzzle and a speech bubble reading 'Okay smot guy! Let's see you take a crack at it!' onto it in 2009. The absurd pairing of political indignation with a childish jigsaw sat dormant for years before taking off as a redraw and character-swap format in 2022.

Overview

The joke rides on a tonal mismatch. A real press photo of a visibly furious Joe Biden, mid-shout with his finger stabbing off-frame, is covered with a crudely cut two-piece jigsaw of a yellow smiley face and a cartoon speech bubble3. The bubble puts the words 'Okay smot guy! Let's see you take a crack at it!' into his mouth, so the senator looks like he is challenging the viewer to assemble the easiest puzzle ever made.

The format works two ways. As a flat reaction image, posters drop it into any argument where someone has criticized a thing without offering an alternative, essentially a visual 'you try then'2. As a redraw template, artists swap Biden for another angry character and swap the puzzle for whatever simple task that character is bad at, from Spamton from Deltarune to Dr. Eggman holding up one of the beginner puzzles from Sonic Frontiers8. The misspelled 'smot guy' version and the cleaned-up 'smart guy' recaption both circulate, often side by side.

The underlying photograph was taken by Steve Dykes on October 23rd, 2008, and ran with an NBC News story about Biden calling John McCain's campaign 'a little loose' at a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina1. Biden was pointing toward a part of the crowd he could not reach after the event. Early image-macro communities grabbed the shot in 2009 for unrelated jokes, including a Cheezburger demotivational captioned 'Man loses ceeling cat'2.

The puzzle edit itself was first posted on October 19th, 2009 to the now-defunct humor site iownworld.com, with a watermark crediting a user named HippieCritic3. The image slept for roughly a decade before resurfacing on Twitter, where @DaggettBeaver shared the earliest known social-media copy on February 21st, 20194. A cleaner recaption dropping the 'smot guy' typo for a plain 'Ok smart guy' appeared on iFunny on July 16th, 20205.

How It Spread

The image bounced around iFunny and Facebook through 2020, including a repost by conservative commentator Larry Elder's Facebook page that pulled roughly 13,000 reactions3. None of this made it a format yet, it was still just a shareable one-off.

The real takeoff came on April 5th, 2022, when a Twitter account posing as Jet Set Radio composer Hideki Naganuma tweeted a watermarked copy with the caption 'Ok, smart guy! Let's see YOU take a crack at it!' That post cleared 22,000 likes and lit the fuse for the redraw wave3. Within hours, @ForcedWipepost replied with the first known swap, re-lettering the bubble to read 'Ok smart guy! Let's see YOU eat the gloop'6. On May 12th, 2022, Redditor PlaidTrack posted a Jerma985 version to r/jerma985 that leaned on the streamer's reputation for struggling with puzzles on stream6.

The format then moved into full character redraws. On July 2nd, 2022, Tumblr user ozzyquest drew Spamton from Deltarune holding the puzzle, racking up more than 700 notes7. On November 12th, 2022, @DakDread posted a rough Dr. Eggman edit mocking the beginner-level puzzle sections in Sonic Frontiers that pulled around 17,000 likes8. Redraws kept appearing into 2023 on DeviantArt and Tumblr, including a Cirno version from Touhou910.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an exploitable image macro built from a 2008 photo of Joe Biden shouting, with a two-piece smiley-face jigsaw and a speech bubble daring the viewer to solve a trivially easy puzzle3.

The base photo was taken by Steve Dykes for an NBC News story on October 23rd, 20081. The puzzle edit was posted to iownworld.com on October 19th, 2009 by a user named HippieCritic3.

It mocks someone for criticizing a task while implying they could not do the task themselves, with the catch that the 'task' in the image is an insultingly simple two-piece puzzle3.

People post the original as a flat reaction or redraw it with another angry character holding a trivially easy puzzle tied to that character's known weakness, such as Jerma struggling with puzzles6 or Eggman and Sonic Frontiers' beginner challenges8.

The redraw format had its biggest run through 2022 and into 2023 on Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr and DeviantArt, with viral examples like the Eggman edit pulling about 17,000 likes8 and later entries like a Cirno redraw keeping the template alive9.
