Patrick Chained is an image macro that pairs a shot of a chained-up Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants with the question 'What's An X Opinion That'll Get You Like This?' The format first picked up steam on an Elden Ring subreddit in May 2022 before blowing up on X in September 2023, when a single tweet by @ncunderscore2 kicked off a weekend of controversial-take dunks that spawned trans, wizarding, and gaming spin-offs.

Overview

The image at the center of Patrick Chained comes from a 2001 SpongeBob SquarePants episode where Patrick Star gets wrongfully blamed for upsetting a giant oyster and ends up tied in chains inside Oyster Stadium while a crowd pelts him with peanuts6. The screengrab turns that moment into a visual threat for the caption 'What's An X Opinion That'll Get You Like This?' Posters swap in a fandom, hobby, political topic, or community name and then volunteer a take spicy enough to earn Patrick's fate.

The format rewards hot takes by baking the backlash into the setup. Admitting the opinion will piss people off reframes the replies as a kind of performance, which is why the template got picked up so hard by fandoms where arguing is already the main sport1. Early viral posts ranged from policy swings like calling for a Universal Basic Income4 to lower-stakes brand jokes dunking on Apple5, with fandom cuts covering wizarding fiction7 and the trans community8. The one constant is the chained Patrick image doing all the emotional labor of saying 'yes, I know this is going to start a fight.'

The chained Patrick screencap had been floating around in meme form for years before the opinion-prompt caption locked in. A November 2019 /r/MemeEconomy post paired it with Mr. Krabs as the real culprit from the episode9, and in June 2021 X user @s4m31p4n posted the same image with a looser suggestive caption10. A Tumblr post from 2022 recycled the image for a complaint about online morality11.

The opinion-asking version was first documented on May 4, 2022 in a post by u/Elibenz936 on the Elden Ring subreddit asking what Elden Ring opinion would get the poster chained up like Patrick1. That thread pulled in close to 22,000 upvotes over the following year and a half1. A repost to /r/shitposting on November 2, 2022, which screenshotted a since-deleted /r/memes thread, pulled 9,500 upvotes and seeded fandom-specific spinoffs on other subreddits3.

How It Spread

The X breakout came on September 14, 2023, when @ncunderscore2 posted the Patrick image with a caption asking people to share a view they held that would attract controversy2. The original tweet drew close to 2,000 likes over four days, but the real volume showed up in the quote-tweet column, where it collected over 7,000 responses that weekend12.

Several of those quote-tweets hit significantly harder than the original. On September 16, @ImTheReasonWhy pulled over 51,000 likes in two days for a post calling for Universal Basic Income4, and @damnitoni cleared 307,000 likes for an Apple-dunking take over the same window5. On September 17, fandom-specific versions started circulating in volume, with @itskindred collecting almost 24,000 likes for a wizarding-community cut7 and @GABAGOOLMODER landing nearly 4,000 likes for a trans-community version the same day8.

Backlash tracked the spread almost immediately. X user @hmardukis504 called the format 'engagement farming' on September 17 and predicted it would hop to right-wing communities next, a sentiment echoed throughout the reply guys underneath most viral postings12.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically pairs the Patrick in chains screencap with the caption 'What's An [X] Opinion That'll Get You Like This?' where X is swapped for a fandom, political affiliation, hobby, or demographic. Common convention is to not share the actual controversial opinion in the image itself, instead inviting replies and quote-tweets to volunteer their takes under the implied threat of a peanut-throwing mob2. The format often reads best when the X is a tight-knit community already known for infighting.
