Pinching Hand Emoji is a Unicode symbol showing a thumb and index finger held close together, approved in early 2019 to indicate a small amount. Within hours of Emojipedia's announcement, Twitter users repurposed it as shorthand for a small penis, sparking one of the most viral emoji reactions of the year.

Overview

Pinching Hand Emoji shows a single hand with the thumb and index finger held a short distance apart, the universal hand gesture people use when talking about a tiny amount of something2. Unicode designed it to mean exactly that, a way to say 'just a little' or 'this small' without words2. Almost nobody uses it that way.

The joke that overtook the emoji within a day of its reveal is that the gesture also looks like someone estimating the length of a small penis5. That reading turned it into a Twitter weapon for clapping back at unsolicited dick pics and mocking men's egos7. Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge told BuzzFeed News that while the gesture makes sense for describing 'a small amount of something,' out of context 'it does seem to imply a man's small package'7.

The emoji itself came from the Unicode Consortium, which approved it as part of Unicode 12.0 in early 20192. On February 5th, 2019, Emojipedia announced the batch of 230 new emoji arriving on phones that year and tweeted an image of the Pinching Hand, pulling in more than 3,600 retweets and 12,000 likes1.

The innuendo reading appeared almost immediately. That same day, Twitter user @kathbarbadoro posted 'FINALLY a small dick emoji,' which racked up more than 3,000 retweets and 12,000 likes within 24 hours1. The 'small dick' framing, not Unicode's official 'small amount' meaning, is what carried the emoji into wider culture6.

How It Spread

Within hours of the Emojipedia announcement on February 5th, 2019, the small-penis interpretation dominated Twitter6. User @NeptxneDubz tweeted 'Unsolicited dick pic community is in a panic rn' and hit more than 61,000 retweets and 250,000 likes in a day1. BuzzFeed News catalogued dozens of similar reactions, from 'A damaging blow to the dick pic economy' to 'tinder DMs about to get amazing,' framing the emoji as a new tool women had against unwanted nudes7.

Mainstream tech and pop-culture press picked it up the same week. Mashable ran a piece calling it 'sure to be a devastating addition to one's arsenal of emoji insults,' pitching it as the opposite of the eggplant5. PopBuzz nicknamed it the 'small dick energy' emoji and rounded up the top jokes6. BuzzFeed News got a comment on the record from Emojipedia's Jeremy Burge acknowledging the accidental reading7.

The emoji also drew a darker response. On February 8th, 2019, a 4chan /pol/ thread titled '#NotOK to Pinch' called for turning the symbol into a hate image, and the #NotOK hashtag briefly surfaced on Twitter with photoshops accusing the emoji of representing 'picking cotton'1. According to Emojipedia, the symbol later became the subject of a conspiracy theory in South Korea alleging it was used to insult men2. The emoji shipped to iOS and Android later in 2019 and is still one of the most recognizable gesture emoji in the set5.
