Overview

So Wake Me Up Dog, also called the Wake Me Up Dog, is a viral TikTok clip built from a single still photograph of a small, fluffy white dog. Run through the Revive app filter, the picture appears to lip-sync the chorus of Avicii's 2013 hit 'Wake Me Up,' specifically the lines 'So wake me up when it's all over. When I'm wiser and I'm older'1.

The charm sits in the mismatch between the frozen, cartoon-soft face of the dog and the earnest EDM vocal coming out of its mouth. Fans quickly dropped the animated pup into CapCut templates, other song mashups, and the 'Only in Ohio' trend, turning one lip-sync into a small ecosystem of edits5.

On October 17th, 2022, TikTok user @peanut_2323 posted the original clip, feeding a still photograph of her dog into the Revive app so it looked like the dog was singing Avicii's 'Wake Me Up'1. The video pulled roughly 7.1 million views and 1.6 million likes over the following month.

Twelve days later, on October 29th, TikToker @mydookiefeltsogood cropped the clip and reposted it with the caption 'So wake me up #dog,' which is where the shortened phrasing 'So Wake Me Up Dog' first stuck as a name for the bit2. That repost picked up around 231,400 plays and 36,100 likes before being deleted.

How It Spread

The dog crossed into edit-culture on November 7th, 2022, when TikToker @ivanobeats_ dropped the singing pup into a run of CapCut templates, one of the earliest videos to treat the clip as a reusable sticker rather than a one-off. That compilation racked up about 5.1 million views and 1.1 million likes in nine days3.

A week later, on November 15th, TikToker @noahglenncarter posted a video telling his followers to swap their profile pictures for the Wake Me Up Dog wearing a Santa hat, kicking off what fans jokingly named the 'Wake Me Up Dog Cult'4. The clip pulled roughly 396,600 plays and 47,000 likes in under a day, and he followed the same day with a TikTok voice-changer version that added another 47,100 plays4.

Through late 2022, the dog kept popping up across TikTok, spliced into new CapCut templates and folded into the 'Only in Ohio' cycle, where absurd characters get thrown into surreal edits5.

How to Use This Meme

Creators typically pull the animated dog clip into CapCut or a similar editor and paste it over new backdrops or between other song lip-syncs. A common convention is to keep Avicii's original vocal intact and use the dog as a visual sticker rather than swap in a new audio track3.
