After a November 2013 episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic aired, brony fans fixated on a brief prop the villain Discord hands the protagonist: a gold scepter topped with Twilight Sparkle's own sheepish grinning head. Within hours, 4chan's /mlp/ board was flooded with photoshops, kicking off one of the show's quickest fandom crazes.

Overview

The Twilight Sparkle Scepter, also known as theTwilicane, is a prop from Season 4 Episode 2 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a gold cane topped with a miniature model of Twilight Sparkle's own head wearing a goofy, sheepish grin1. The scepter appears on screen for only a few seconds when the villain Discord gives it to Twilight along with a royal cape to mock her new princess status, but the absurd design made it an instant target for fan edits3.

The format runs almost entirely off the inherent silliness of the object. Fans ran with the royal cane framing, posing Twilight as a smug monarch brandishing her own head on a stick. First-wave edits included image macros, vectors, 3D-modeled renders in Garry's Mod and Team Fortress 2, and face-swapped photoshops where other characters got the Twilicane treatment5.

The scepter appeared in "Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 2," the second half of the Season 4 premiere of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which first aired on November 23rd, 20133. Threads about the episode started on 4chan's /mlp/ (pony) board the same night, and within a few hours a screencap thread had singled out the scepter as the standout detail2. A dedicated thread about the scepter went up shortly after, and photoshops began appearing almost immediately3.

Storyboard artist Sabrina Alberghetti, who animated the scene, acknowledged the overnight craze the next day. She posted a face-swapped edit of Twilight and the scepter to Twitter with the caption "So apparently this is a thing now? You guys are nuts," and later commented on a DeviantART vector of the scepter confirming she had animated the sequence7.

How It Spread

On November 24th, 2013, YouTuber Daimondo uploaded a Garry's Mod sandbox video featuring a 3D-rendered Twilicane model6. The same day, the fandom blog Equestria Daily published a roundup of the overnight explosion, linking out to Garry's Mod and Team Fortress 2 3D models of the scepter and a newly launched "Ask Twilight Scepter" Tumblr blog built around the gag18.

The format jumped boards fast. On November 25th, Redditor scottfra posted an animated GIF of a dead horse being beaten with the scepter to the r/mylittlepony subreddit, which pulled over 520 upvotes and 35 comments in its first 16 hours4. The same day, MLP Forums user Bunny opened a thread tracking the Twilicane's spread on the pony image host Derpibooru, where edits tagged "twilight scepter" piled up quickly9. YouTuber MrMental4 also posted a Leekspin-style loop animation of Twilight waving the scepter around on November 25th10.

The scepter still works as a shorthand gag inside the brony fandom, with the "twilight scepter" tag on Derpibooru holding the running archive of edits3.
