Trolldad is a rage comic series where a father sets up his kid with an innocent question, then springs a dad-joke pun that triggers the classic FFFFFUUU rage face. The format surfaced on Reddit's rage comic subreddit around mid-2010 and became one of the signature family bits of the rage comic boom.

Overview

Every Trolldad strip follows a tight bait-and-switch script. The dad is drawn with the Troll Face or Cool Face, the kid asks a straight question, and dad answers with a pun that twists the setup into a groaner. The last panel usually shows the child pulling the Rage Guy face while dad does a victory dance3.

Variants include knock-knock jokes, deliberate misreadings of a word, and the classic "Hi hungry, I'm Dad" style of trade. Readers often framed Trolldad comics as autobiographical, "my dad actually does this" posts rather than pure fiction2. Urban Dictionary even coined spinoff slang like "trolldar," the sixth sense that tells you a troll setup is coming2.

Google searches for "troll dad" started climbing around July 2009, but the earliest rage comics using the Trolldad label showed up on Reddit's r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu subreddit around June 20105. The character sat inside the broader Rage Comic boom and reused existing art, borrowing Troll Face for the father and Rage Guy for the child3.

No single author claimed the format. It spread as a user-made template on the subreddit, with new strips posted anonymously or under throwaway Reddit handles1.

How It Spread

From r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu, Trolldad hopped to the usual rage comic hubs: MemeBase, FunnyJunk, and MemeGenerator, which hosted a dedicated Troll Dad template so anyone could stamp their own pun onto the troll-faced father4. A single-topic blog at trolldad.com collected submissions and reposted strips for a dedicated audience6.

The strips were a staple of "You Laugh You Lose" threads during the peak rage comic era, and the knock-knock joke variant became one of the subreddit's most circulated examples1. Urban Dictionary entries documented both the format and its slang offshoots, including the Facebook-era "Trollnado" sense of a thread derailed by a troll2.

As the wider rage comic trend faded in the mid-2010s, Trolldad settled into classic status: still referenced as a touchstone of the Reddit rage comic years rather than an active format3.
