Overview

Twitter Header Won't Fit is a tweet format where users screenshot the Twitter header cropping tool boxing in a photo, then complain that they can't fit the whole image into their profile banner1. The bit started earnestly in 2019 but quickly turned into bait, since the only way to check whether the poster actually solved the crop was to click into their profile, boosting engagement in the process3.

In 2023 the joke mutated into How Do I Fit This Into My Header, in which a user posts a tall or awkward image, then follows up claiming they figured it out, only for their actual header to display a photo or name of someone they dislike2. A common variant swaps the roles, using a trash can as the header image over a photo of a disliked celebrity, game, or creator1.

On August 17, 2019, Twitter user @whitcombailey posted, "All I want in life is to take a photo where my boyfriend and I's faces can both fit into my Twitter header," attaching selfies with the header cropping rectangle awkwardly framing only one of their heads at a time1. Within a month the tweet picked up more than 37,400 retweets and 264,500 likes, and the replies filled with users offering crop suggestions1.

Because checking whether the poster solved the framing meant opening their profile, copycats realized the format worked as a low-effort engagement hook, and by late September 2019 tweets in the same shape were showing up daily3.

How It Spread

On September 17, 2019, @holyfaulkner used the format on the celebrity couple Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Josephine Langford, gathering over 38,200 likes and 8,600 retweets in about a week2. Days later, on September 22, @shonen_boi_ zoomed out and put the whole planet Earth inside the cropping tool, joking about wanting to fit their world in their header3. By September 23, @_ProfJelko_ was already tweeting frustration that the header bait kept working on people despite being predictable4.

The format went quiet until August 18, 2023, when X user @ifihad222choose posted a photo of a tall trash can with the caption "Yo how Tf do I fit this in my header," then quote-tweeted themselves reporting success while switching their actual header to read "Joel Embiid," the NBA player5. That thread pulled roughly 140 reposts and 1,400 likes in the following week6.

A day later, on August 19, 2023, @willsgardevoir flipped the joke by literally putting a trash can in their header while the tweet targeted a person, racking up over 2,300 reposts and 37,100 likes in six days7. The template spread to fandom targets soon after, including versions aimed at YouTuber Dream9 and the video game Valorant10.

How to Use This Meme

The 2019 form typically starts with a tweet complaining that a photo won't fit into the poster's Twitter header, paired with a screenshot of the header cropping tool over the image so viewers are tempted to click through to check the profile. The 2023 How Do I Fit This Into My Header variant is a two-part post, an initial tweet showing an awkward image (often a tall trash can) followed by a quote-tweet declaring success, while the actual profile header displays a name or picture of someone the poster wants to insult.
